Has anyone here had experience with the Sig P290rs in .380?

My daughter has expressed interest in getting a CWP and has asked to go to the range with me. She will be shooting my Shield 9 and Kahr P380. She may be able to rack the slide on the Shield, but that P380 is a little too stiff for her I think.

I know that she needs to try out a good many different guns, but I am thinking the 290rs in.380 may be a good fit for her. I have seen a couple of positive reviews of this gun, but really would like to hear from you guys on THR. The reviews claim the slide to be very light to rack -- is this the case?

Thanks

I think the 290 is a 9mm. gun ... never heard of a .380 version.
I suppose they could exist but I wonder why Sig would make them since they have the P238 in that caliber and it's smaller and overall (IMHO) a nicer gun.

Different gun altogether. The 290 is DAO while the 238 is SA. Also, $400 for 290 vs $650 for 238.

Trust me, I know my daughter and she doesn't need a SA as a beginners gun.

So again, any owners out there?

I had a 9mm 290 for a while. Great DA trigger. Long but smooth. Handled recoil very well so i am sure it would be soft shooting in 380

Thanks TennJed -- how was the effort to rack the slide? Compare it to something for me. :)

I'm going to be that guy and mention a different pistol than you're asking about, but the Glock 42 sounds like a good fit. I was surprised with both how easy the slide was to rack and how minimal recoil was. It is the first polymer .380 that I've shot a mag through and wanted to shoot the gun for the rest of the day.

Honestly i don't recall it being any harder or easier that most guns. It would fall into the "average" i guess.

It really was a great gun. Probably the softest shooting of any 9mm in its size class, great sights too. Unlike most guns its size it was actually fun to shoot.

Honestly the only reason i traded it was it was a little too heavy for me to pocket carry. That is obviously one reason it shot so well, but i wanted something lighter. If the weight isn't an issue i think it would be a great choice

I've shot the 290 9mm and handled the 290 in .380. The 9mm wasn't bad to shoot. In .380 it should be fun to shoot. The slide pull is super-light on the .380 version.

Thanks for the info guys.

I'm going to take my daughter to the range and let her shoot my guns and see how she handles them and then we'll see.

I have a 290RS IN 9mm and agree with TennJed and Prince Yamato. The 290 in 9mm is quite accurate, easy to shoot, and easy to rack. It should be even easier to rack and shoot in .380.

My one small complaint is I somewhat wish Sig had elected to simply go with a 7 round magazine and butt length rather than the 6 round/8 round combination. I find the 6 round a bit short (great for concealment, though, its purpose) and the 8 round a bit long (and a bit easier to shoot). A small complaint compared to its virtues.

Have her try a Walther PK380. The slide is very smooth and racks very easily. Several of the reviews point out this fact and say this is what makes it a nice gun for women. It is also a very dependable and accurate shooter.
