Wondering about some sight options for my AK. I've looked at the skinner sight system and it looks nice. I've also looked at a few of the rail systems that mount over the rear cover. The rail systems open up more options including scopes but I don't ever expect to shoot farther than about 200-250 yards. This would be used as a general purpose rifle. I currently keep a lever action in my truck but will likely switch it out with the AK.

Thoughts?

Well you are lucky in that have more options than ever. Here is a list I can think of off the top of my head.
-You have the Iron Dot type like larue, midwest ind., attero arms that replace the rear sight leif with a small rail you can mount a micro red dot to.
-Rail cover replacements like the TWS and AKARS
-Forward mounts like Ultimak that replace the gas tube and midwest ind. handgaurds with built in options for optics
-Side rail mounts from Kalinka, midwest ind., utg
-Tec Sights that replace the top cover with a rear mounted AR style sight but have no rail
-Krebs and mojo peep sights
-Ameriglo night sights
-Russian optics that use the side rail, almost all available from Kalinka Optics

fatcat covered pretty much all your options but if I might make a suggestion I think a little time over at http://russianoptics.net/default.html would be worth your time. The guy who runs the sight owns a huge number of combloc optics which run the gamut from simple scopes, to red dots, and even a few that are similiar to ACOGs (for far less money). You might not find anything you like there but it's truly staggering the array of purpose built AK optics available.

If you travel near the Memphis area I'll be glad to let you try my SKS with the fully-adjustable version of the Tech Sights.

It's now a different rifle, much better than it was. This is the only "gear" I've ever installed on a gun, and the best $65 or so I've ever spent.

I prefer a good red dot. Personally an H1 or T1 aimpoint is what I like. For the ranges and type of shooting an AK is designed for it is nice. It is a huge improvement over the open sights of the AK. I think there are three ways to mount it that are better than the side mount options. The TWS dust cover, the ultimak gas tube, or the MI handguards. I have no experience with the MI micro dot that goes in place of the rear sight so I cannot comment on it.

I have an AK with a rear peep. It has some advantages over the stock open sights but I would much rather have a quality RDS. An aimpoint costs as much as an AK and that is a turn off to some folks. Hands down it is probably the best addition one can make to an AK though.

Yes, like briansmithwins said, the best options for optics are those that put the sight low above the bore, i.e. where you can see the iron sights through the tube of a red dot (co-witnessing). The main reason to do this is so that you don't need to add an awkwardly high cheek rest to your stock to get cheek weld. Also it is handy to be able to shoot with your irons without having to remove the optic.
