Does anyone know why the newer bolt action rifles are made without iron sights? Only a few models come with sights on them. All of my older bolts have iron sights.

I've read that a front sight on the barrel can affect barrel harmonics, affecting accuracy. I believe this is also why barrels "free float" ( ideally) without touching the stock.

because most people are going to scope the gun anyway. a front sight does not affect accuracy & the factory sights are cheap junk now

I understand that a rifle without sights is a scope rifle, I just don't understand why manufacturers don't put sights on say for example a Model 700 any more.
One of the many reasons I like CZ rifles is they offer a good selection of scope dedicated and iron sight rifles. Generally speaking, the American and Varmint versions are scoped; the 527 Lux and Carbine, for exemple, are sighted as are many 550 rifles. The CZ irons are good to excellent, particularly on the rimfire rifles.

Most sporting rifles are generally a variation of military rifles which all have iron sights. Soldiers who served in previous wars were all trained how to shoot accurately with iron sights. As they filtered back into civilian life, manufacturers gave them what they had been using. Not until the 1960-1970's did scopes become more and more popular. So much so, that the iron sights supplied on new guns by manufacturers were routinely being discarded in favor of scopes. Why increase the price of the gun with iron sights when most buyers are tossing them? If gun owners want iron sights it's now an option and additional charge.
Since almost everyone puts a scope on bolt actions, the manufacturers have decided to reduce their costs by a few bucks and leave off iron sights that most people won't use anyway. The iron sights on the models that do have them are generally useless, with the exception of CZ.

Iron sights on a hunting rifle can and have saved the hunt before. one of my rifles took a bad hit to the scope and it was done, all I had to was remove it and was back in the hunt. Got my pig that day to.
