Silver dollar commemorates Marines

The silver dollar celebrates the 230th anniversary of the Marine Corps.

QUANTICO, Virginia (AP) -- A 1945 photograph taken at Iwo Jima was memorialized in a commemorative coin released Wednesday celebrating the 230th anniversary of the Marine Corps.

The silver dollar, featuring Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal's historic flag-raising photograph, was released during a ceremony at U.S. Marine Corps Base Quantico.

At the ceremony, officials including U.S. Mint Director Henrietta Holsman Fore presented two shiny, new silver dollars to retired Lt. Gen. Ron Christmas, president of the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation.

Part of the proceeds from the sale of the coins will go to the foundation to help build the new National Museum of the Marine Corps at Quantico.

The silver dollars are available online, by telephone and by mail from the Mint.

The coins are available from the Mint here:

and more info here:

I recommend getting the proof coin if you are choosing between the Proof and the Uncirculated single coins.

The Mint’s web site has a lot of problems when new coins are released; they don’t seem able to handle the traffic. Ordering one by phone might be easier:

These are backordered to October (typical Mint operation), but I wouldn’t wait until then. The total number of coins is limited to 600,000, and there is a lot of interest in the collector community.

I expect to see these being sold on eBay for much more money than what the Mint is selling them, but it doesn’t always work out that way. Some commemoratives sell on eBay for less than what the Mint originally sold them for.

Thank you...

For reminding me to place my order!

:D

Minutes later...

Done! Used the website without a hitch i do see that it's backordered till October FYI

So does this replace the Sacajawea (sp?), which replaced the Susan B. Anthony?
No. The U.S. Mint is authorized to produce two commemoratives per year, and the proceeds usually go to some cause. I think the coins are legal tender, but they are not released by the Mint into general circulation. There will be something new next year.

As of just now, 2:30pm eastern, the US Mint is no longer offering the Marine Corps coin. I called the 800 order line and received that message.

Bummer. I should have been quicker. :(

I just called the Mint to check on that, and the lady I talked to assures me that the coins are still available. That is, you can still buy

1) the individual Proof coin;
2) the individual Uncirculated coin;

The item that is sold out is the combination Coin and Stamp Set.

If you still want a coin, I recommend you call at 1-800-872-6468. They have operators 8am to midnight (Eastern), seven days a week.
