Single-Shot 22 Rifle

Nothing wrong with a used rifle. I own two. Remington 870 and Stevens Model 94 (I think, barrel stamped 62) But for the price of a Remington 41 I could spend about 40 or 50 more dollars and have a brand new Savage. Unfortunately I live in the land of NO pawn shops. I mean none. If you want a used rifle you are limited to one store and they charge retail for used...strange if you ask me. I would have to drive maybe 6 hours more more to find a shop selling used rifles at a reasonable price.

Now with the trifocals I have the choice between front and rear sight clear or front sight and target clear. No go on all three but I don't want to drill and tap it for a scope.

Peep sights work well for my aging eyes. And I don't have to give up good handling like I would with a scope.

I have seen 1 shot mags that were homebuilt for Savage MK IIs-- I have several 10 rounders for mine, but I prefer the 5 shot ones...check over at Rimfire Central...

Walter Oakley: That gun looks very familar :) I have shot one like that quite a bit. Agree 100% about the small number of moving parts being an attribute.

After looking up dealer locations on the Savage website, I have come to the realization that there are none in my area. For a town with tens of thousands of people (probably more if you count both sides of the creek) I am disappointed that there are not more places around to find a good deal on a used rifle like the one of which y'all speak.

There is however a CZ dealership on one side of town and an Academy sports on the other. One stopped answering their phone a while back. Tomorrow will the be day to drive around and take a look at rifles. Hopefully some of these local shops will have something in stock to look at. Pictures are only so good.

Thanks for all the feedback!

If you want a -real- Stevens Favorite or Crackshot, I'll have one of each on the "sale" board either later today or tomorrow.

In my neverending quest to get folks to spend too much money, how about a new or used Varner single shot .22?

I have good luck out of my kimber 82 gov.

can be had at a good price and capable of some crazy accuracy.

Wow that's a bummer on the pawn shops. In my area they mostly charge too much for guns anyway. It's gun shops that have decent deals from time to time. Not the big chain variety but the mom and pop stores.

The pawn shops around here put very high price tags on their guns, but sometimes if you make a cash offer he will look at his books and see if he can make money. If he can then he will let it go at that price. I've gotten some very good deals that way......................I've been told no a lot too. :D

Savage / Stevens falling block model 30G

Stevens Favorite 30G single shot New production item. In the $300. price range.

I went by the local shops today. Lots of 10/22's, and not much else. One guy said he would order the Savage Mark I-G, or the Mark 1-FVT...for retail prices.

Walmart on the other hand, has the Mark 1-G in their catalog for 180, which doesn't seem like a bad price, but I could get other 22's for not much more money.

I just dont see almost 400 dollars for the Mk 1 FVT. The 1-G might be in my future.

Unfortunately I like the 10/22 the best out of the auto (rifles) I have shot. It didn't make me want one though.

The search continues...

I agree about Marlin. Actually, their customer service has won me over in the past 2 weeks, but that's another story.

The 915 would be perfect, if they would make a full sized model. Seems that the only one you can get is the youth, and its only 33 and a bit inches long. A bit short for my liking.

Anyone know if they used to make one like that? Single shot marlin bolt action? Like the 915??

I had a chance to shoulder a Savage Mark I GY, youth model, today. It is only an inch or so shorter length of pull, and a few inches over all shorter.

The wooden stock gave me some reservations until I actually held it. Not a fancy or expensive stock, but well made.

It was used though, and for 175 it seemed a bit too much.

The Savage Mark I G, regular length, is available from 3 places in town. But only two have any in stock. It means paying right at $50 dollars more than the big box store down the road....but, that big box store doesn't have any in stock right now.

My intitial estimates are about 244 out of the door. Does that sound like a good deal? I could save myself 6 or 7 dollars, but have to wait twice and long and deal with an individual FFL.

Not here. I would have to either drive to NM (not sure about legality of buying a firearm in NM with intent on bringing it back to TX, which is my state of residence), or drive no less than 5 or 6 hours in Texas one way to maybe find a store that had any used 22lr rifles for sale. None of the stores in my town have any. I have checked twice in the past week. Strange place...

I give up. What's the difference between a single shot and a manual action?

Also, I second the used gun market approach. I have a marlin 100 I bought for 50 dollars in great condition. You can go to gunbroker and they have a section dedicated to single shot rifles. Just do a search for .22.

Good luck.

Perhaps I am using the wrong terminology. I am going to purchase, and want, a bolt action rifle that is only capable of taking one round at a time. No tubular fed or magazine fed capabilities. A manual action as I understand it means that you have to manually remove the empty shell from the weapon after each firing by means of some device. Either a bolt, or a lever or a button.

I have also researched a bit on gunbroker. But the idea of purchasing a rifle from someone, somewhere, that I am not going to see until I receive it. Well that isn't exactly comforting. Now if I were able to conviently drive to a shop that sold used rifles in the price range of 1-150 dollars, I would gladly do so. But I live in El Paso, and I can't seem to find any here. If I drive east into Texas on a major highway, it would take no less than 250 miles one way to reach a town with a decent selection of firearms worth the drive.

I personally would look for an old Remington single shot rifle. They're inexpensive unless your talking about their specialized target models that were single shot.

Excellent advice. Plus one.

You might want to try looking in pawn shops. As I recall the "third heard" is based in El Paso, so you probably have several pawn shops. Remember the price on the tag is just their asking price. They will usually let it go for much less if you can deal in cash.

Pawnshops are a great idea. You can get some good deals.

Also, I have an old mossberg single shot with a heavy target barrel and MC stock. Sweet gun and I've seen them for about 200.00 (It was a target model so it's more expensive) Still way worth it though. It shoots everything well, but match ammo is terrific.

T/C Arms manufactures the Contender, and the Encore.

Savage also manufactures a single-shot, bolt-action.

I will pick up the Savage Mark I-G single shot 22 tomorrow afternoon. It was ordered yesterday from the only store in town that had one available.

I appreciate the suggestions. That rifle is what I was wanting, and I am looking forward to taking it out for a test run tomorrow.

Almost picked up a remington model 5, but the magazine didn't suit me very well. It was a nice rifle otherwise.

After about two weeks of searching, there are officially no used single shot rifles for sale in town.

El Paso isn't too small. 750,000 people. Give or take. And that is just on this side of the border, there are about a million on the other side. There are about 4 gun stores, none of which have many (maybe a handful between them) used long rifles. Pistols, maybe more. I have called and been by most of the pawn shops. When asking if they carry or have any firearms in the store, the response I get seems like I asked if they abused puppies there. "NO, oh no, not here, not this store."

Frustrating, but I did find one place that would order what I wanted. I am ready to put some holes in some tin cans from 50 meters!!!

Any other town I have stayed in, some as small as a few thousand, had a plethora of used firearms for decent prices. Its just the added cost when you consider driving somewhere else, because it is so far from anywhere. Just makes more sense to buy new.
