I hear the term going around a lot- I always thought a "single shot" weapon was loaded manually between shots (ex: muzzleloaders, rifles without magazines, black powder pistols etc) rather than fed from a magazine (ex: mauser actions, lever action rifles, single action revolvers etc).

What's the difference in terms?

That's always what I thought a single-shot firearm was...

One cartridge/load at a time, like the NEF, Rossi and other break-open single barrel rifles & shotguns, flintlock Black Powder arms whether rifle or handgun, etc. One shot, then a complete reload function before the next round can be fired.

Yep, all others (revolvers, bolt action, etc.) that have a magazine, or more than one cartridge/shot in store, are repeaters not single shots.

HTH.

I had a Llama 45

it had a mag and was a single shot. You pulled the trigger, it went bang, you cleared the jam, reloaded and shot again.

That's always been my interpritation :) Mind you I have suffered Repeating weapons that were as fast to use as a muzzle loader :banghead: :cuss: :fire:

Does the question come because of TV explanations of the difference between assult weapons and other less terrifying arms?

In my best anchor person authoritve tone: "This AR15 is an assult weapon because it looks just like a gun that can kill 30 people with ONE trigger pull. This Mini 14 is not because it only fires single shots for each triiger pull, so you have to pull the trigger THIRTY times to kill as many innocent victims". (Authoritive tone off, logic back on)
