I have a Norinco SKS and am wondering about magazines for it. I have never gotten then, just using stripper clips, because when I first got it I heard that the magazines for it were terrible. Is this true/still true?

Obviously, in order to use mags, I'd have to remove the box on the bottom that currently houses the ammo, right? If I were to try mags, would that be easy to put back into place?

Thanks in advance!

Kellen

You can get magazines but you have to modify or replace the stock to secure them. In my experience you can reload with the stripper clips as fast as you can change a magazine and not have the bother of misfeeds.

Yup, to revert back to original configuration, all one has to do is remove the trigger assembly, place the fixed magazine back where it should be and snap the trigger assembly back into place.

From what I've heard, most people who remove the original magazine to make use of the higher-capacity detachable magazines go back to the original at some point. I was one of them.

I never had to modify the stock to make them work but I have had to "tweak" them a little to get positive feeding. There is also that little thing called 922(r) compliance.

I have nothing but bad things to say about SKS duck-bill magazines.

So I just will keep my mouth shut.
Mostly.

It was designed to work with stripper clips, and it does.

If you want 30-round mags, trade it for an AK-47.

If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it.

I have one of the rare 'D" models that take AK-47 magazines. These were only imported for a short time in 1989 before the AWB put an end to it. I much prefer the solid milled SKS receiver to any stamped sheet metal AK.

I had a 30rd mag for mine, I tried to tweak it to where it would attach and detach easily but I still had to use a hammer and a screwdriver to do it, I finally just modified it so I could feed the 30rd mag with stripper clips.

I've never had feeding problems from detachable mags, Attaching them to the gun is a pain and for me lots slower than stripper clips. I've never had to mod a stock of use a screwdriver and hammer to get them to seat though.

Avoid the mags like a rabid racoon; the factory-stock system works perfectly and the magazines do nothing but add expenses and complications.

I was one of them too, BUT, I did research before I bought any mags and everyone raved about the Tapco 20 rounders so I bought a couple and they worked perfectly and I never had any issues with it. I ultimately reverted to the stock 10 round mag because it was just easier to use stripper clips and the gun is more compact that way.

My SKS worked with the 30 round mag with a Tapco folding stock but it was a huge pain when I went back to the wood stock.

I like the looks of the SKS in original configuration personally.
