Does anyone know a good company to buy 7.62x39? Im getting ready buy a chinese sks and I would like something fairly non corrosive that wont jamb. Now im not tournament shooting or hunting(yet) or anything like that so it doesn't have to be high dollar. Just something to shoot that I can't trust wont tear up my barrel. Or the chamber. Any suggestions would be helpfull. Thanks.

You DON'T want 7.62x51mm. That's 7.62 NATO (.308 Winchester). It won't even go in the magazine, much less chamber.

You want 7.62x39mm Soviet.

I foolishly bought 1,000 rounds of Wolf brand ammo. I liked the price, hated the quality. About every 8-10th round the primer will fail to go off. It's terrible. Avoid it.

You can purchase 7.62x39mm from Cabela's. They from time to time have different brand's like "Wolf Performance"(black box), "Wolf Military Classic"(camo box), Tula, etc..
another is "Herter's" and it is really just different types of current non-corrosive Russian brands that are all good and I have never had an issue with any of the above mentioned brands. The 7.62x39mm comes in basically 122gr. FMJ/HP----154gr. SP. Also don't mistaken the term 7.62Russian, the 7.62Russian is actually the 7.62x54Rmm "rimmed" cartraidge used for the higher powered Mosin-Nagant battle rifle. Good luck!

I've shot thousands or rounds of the cheap military stuff. Never had a miss fire, or jam. Clean it once in a while and ya wont have any problems with the corrosive stuff.

I mention the 7.62x54Rmm so that you don't make the mistake of purchasing it online and realize it is also too big for your SKS mag. I will however suggest getting a Mosin-Nagant they go for about $80-$110.

If you are using an SKS, I have never seen or heard of Wolf being unreliable. This may be a symptom of a dangerous condition. Check your FP channel for cosmo that may be giving light strikes. The same gunk has caused many an SKS to go FA unnexpectedly when the gunk caused the FP to remain protruded, slamfiring the mag dry.

Wolf is pretty much the only 7.62x39 ammo I have used. It's low priced and my ak and sks both make it go "boom" every time. Sure its not the most accurate ammunition in the world but when I'm shooting those guns pinpoint accuracy generally isn't a huge concern...oh, and did I mention it doesn't cost much? :p

First let me say I'm a SKS user, not a collector. I presently have 3 Chi-Com SKS carbines, 16" barrels.

I bought these guns in the 80's & early 90's when there were much less expensive than they are now. I have give 4 to 6 as presents to young men in the family. Some liked them some didn't.

My SKS has a Butler Creek stock, an ATI (drill and tap) scope mount and a 1.5 to 5 Simmons scope. It is mounted in a way where I can still use stripper clips on it. This is the rifle I keep at my back door, (for varmints and such), and my inclement weather hunter.

My wife is basically stock except for a red Chi-Com fiber glass stock. I'm sorry I haven't seen a Chi-Com stock that even made good fire wood.

The third is my "travel gun". When I take a trip over 100 miles it and a pouch of loaded stripper clips come with me, on top of my CCW handguns.

I use to have and ATI folder on it. The stock made a very compact package, but I COULDN'T KEEP THE GUN ZEROED. I could see the receiver move as I pulled the trigger. I used mild jug pieces to shim it all over to no avail.

I've recently put a Tapco stock. I LOVE this stock. It's longer collapsed than the ATI, but it feel so solid and so "right", that I may put the Tapco on ALL my SKS's.

The Russian ammo is OK, IMO. I've never had a miss fire. The cheap Russian HP rounds are better hunters than the Remington SP rounds. IMO again. However Russian ammo in not the most accurate. Lapua, and winchester ammo will cut you group size in haft if you do your part. I've recently bought some custom loaded ammo by Precision. It's loaded with virgin brass an uses the V-Max bullet. While zeroing I was shooting clovers leafs at 50 yards. I haven't shot game with it yet, but the gun store talk is good, we'll see.

Bottom line, the SKS is a solid dependable rifle. IT'S NOT A MATCH RIFLE. But it will serve well as a shooter, hunter and protection weapon. Plus it is just fun to shoot.

I wouldn't reccomend shooting corrosive ammo unless you know exactly what you're doing cleaning wise. I'm looking at buying a new barrel for a AK74 and learning how to install it because I didn't know the right way to clean up after corrosive primers. The fact that CAI didn't chrome line the original barrel probably didn't help either.

You do know that ammo is corrosive?

If the 7.62x39 on stripper clips at AIM is made by Igman (like the 15 round boxes AIM was selling last fall) then it is also some of the most accurate ammo you will find. Yes it's corrosive, but a liberal application of windex before a regular cleaning with Hoppes will allow to shoot that ammo without any problems.

People always forget to clean the gas tube and piston.
