Slide not fully going into battery

Get a different manual, say the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook, so you aren't so absolute about what is printed in the Lee book. Best of all, place greatest credence in what the powder company publishes. I get that you want to try some things before pulling bullets, but don't be tone deaf about advice to increase the load.

A lead ring being deposited in the chamber.

I had this with a seating die that had a too small inside diameter. After making adjustments to the die, it no longer does it.

"(Heavy crimping isn't necessary.)"

I would have to disagree with this statement. On .40 S&W cast bullets mic at .401 instead of .400. I shoot a CZ75 in .40S&W with MO bullet cast lead. My gun requires a very heavy crimp to chamber. If I use jacketed bullets (.400 dia) they will chamber and function with the bell removed.

Maybe the gun is telling you it isn't adjusted for lead bullet diameters. The heavy crimp can serve to resize the bullet as much as the whole cartridge. In any case, the discussion is about an instance with 45 ACP. 40 S&W problems is a subject that can quickly hijack the thread.

Everybody has an opinion.
Mine is that the gun's ramp is marginal for those short nosed SWCs. Target pistols are usually heavily throated for them.

Re OAL...
Note the amount of exposed shoulder in Post 21 above.
Don't focus too much on OAL so much as getting that
shoulder correct. That is the critical dimension factor
in making LSWC's clear the ramp transition when feeding.

The cartridge both passes the plunk test and feeds OK
from full slide function. (It's telling you what it wants) ;) :D

The lube from cast bullets will also gunk up your seat/crimp die, I need to clean mine often when loading lead.
