Had the day off & was bored so I grabbed the rifle & headed out to my shooting spot to test & play with some apps I downloaded off the Android Market. One is a range finder that works only with a mil-dot scope called "Mill Dot Calculator" I found it works pretty well when the scope is set to 10x. The other one is a ballistics calculator called "Strelok". This one is pretty sweet!! It does everything but pull the trigger. Best part is their both FREE!!!

They worked pretty well when used together. I was making consistent hits at 670yds & 780yds with my 223. I'm not talking 1", 2" or even 3" groups. I was shooting at 3'x3' rocks.

Just thought I'd share these two apps with my fellow Smart Phone & Shooting enthusiasts friends on THR :)

I'm trying out a Beta of a Win Phone 7.5 ballistics calculator app. I'm not sure how much I can say about it - I don't want to be bothered to re-read the NDA - but I'm sure I can tell you that the interface is nice and the data and calculations seem to be accurate enough. And it's coming soon of course. :)

There are shot timers, Db meters, and even scanner apps (lots of gun enthusiasts are also radio enthusiasts as well). Some apps cost a bit ($1.00 to $2.50 is common) but many are free.

I thought this might be a thread about getting back at your phone because you cannot get away from your boss:evil:. But apps are good too.

I have tried some of the free shot timer apps but none of them worked well and the buzzer on the droid isn't loud enough to hear with ears on. I finally broke down and got a CE Pocket Pro.

Any shot timer apps?

Bang! is the one I have on my phone. It works Okay if the microphone is pointed at the shooter. If you just hold it up, it won't register all the shots.

"Reloading Cost" is free and nice. You punch in what your reloading components cost you, what quantity they were bought in, and what your planned powder charge is. Then it spits out what each round costs, where the money goes, and what a box of 20,30,40..1000 etc costs. Too bad i found this app a day after I spent about 5 mins doing the math to figure it out myself, the pain of it being breaking each component down into a cost "per round" (bag of 50 pieces of brass, box of 25 bullets, 7000 grains of powder, 65 grain powder charge etc) all needs to be converted before finally being added up.

"Any shooting timers?"

You could check out the "PPC Timer" on the Android market. Its a free one too.

For any of you hunters, Cabella's iPhone app is top notch. Too many features to list, but some notable ones are preloadable maps for hunting in areas with no cell coverage, "kill zone" which is a feature that draws concentric circles around your gps location (a "good enough" range finder) and there is another paid service that will put an overlay on your map that shows public lands areas that anyone is free to shoot on.

For balistics, I have bought and tried most of them, but I prefer "Ballistic FTE" for the iphone. A little nicer than Strelok but does not have the nice reticles and with the imposed aimpoints.

I use my smartphone to call my wife and tell her that I'll be in meetings for a few hours before I sneak off to the range.

My Droid didn't seem to like it... neither did the slug that hit it.

EDIT - and I've been thinking of making a shooting-related app, but can't really think of anything I really care to do.

The shooter app is well worth the $10. It even has a patch to interface with a kestrel.

My new gun app lol.

Jk, but for iPhone I love playing Master Shot.

I got AI's Shot timer for my iPhone. I haven't had a chance to test it yet. I had the other free shot timer and it crashed every time. This time seems to be much more stable.
They make a great target app for the droids. lol

KennyFSU - I see that you sent a picture of your iPhone...from your iPhone. That's pretty impressive that your iPhone can take a picture of itself without even using a mirror. Is that an astral projection app? :uhoh:
