I was at a pawnshop in Tampa looking at Smith Revolvers and I ran across two 625's. I haven't messed with one before and I really liked them except for the price. They checked out good mechanically, but they both had carbon all over them. They were asking nearly $800 for used (and filthily) guns.

What is the going street price for these? If I bought one could I get a 45 Colt cylinder or a conversion to shoot 45 Colt in it?

While I was there I saw a M15 with Colt stocks on it. It looked really weird. The stocks looked to be screwed into a portion of the frame.

Are there any Tampa members on the list? Where can I find a GUNSHOP within 45 minute drive from downtown? I don’t mind looking in Pawnshops but I would like to be able to go to a gun shop where the clerks know a little about guns.
 
Well, $800 is too much for a secondhand 625 in THIS area. But are you going to travel 750 miles to buy a gun?

I only get to Tampa about twice a year and don't know the stores well. There is an interesting shop I THINK on Fletcher west of the hospital. Lots of good stuff, but still high prices.

.45 Colt conversion in .45 ACP/AR S&W would be a major project, not just a matter of a cylinder swap like Ruger Blackhawk.
 
Don't let sticker shock scare you off

Pawn shops are notorious for having a huge tag price, but 95% of the time they would never expect someone to actually pay it. To most shops the tag price is just a test of the "sucker born every minute" theory that they would be happy to profit from, but don't really count on (especially with two of an item in stock).

Local shop I bought a used 4006 from had a tag of well over $500 on it, got it for under $320 after tax. If your interested in it bring willingness to dicker, walk out, permit, and CASH (not check or credit card). JMHO

Around here standard (not PC) used 625 in good shape likely would go for around $500 give or take $50.
 
You guys slay me.

It must be a Florida thing. Over here (east coast) I've seen USED (but clean) 625s for no less than $760, new are over $800. I keep hearing these great prices from people all over the country.

I need to move. . .LOL
 
FWIW, the barely-used Model 625-4 I got earlier this year set me back $450. I live in a suburb of Philadelphia, PA.

That was some of the best $450 I've ever spent, by the way.
 
I paid $500 for my little 3 incher last year and it had been a safe queen complete with all the goodies. I don't know where some of yall shop?
 
You might try looking at some gun auctions on the WEB. Most sell new and used guns.

Well. yes firearms seem cheaper on the net sites......and sometimes no doubt are. I have bought several on the net.

However, by the time you pay freight and a receiving dealer service charge ($15.00 - $25.00) you are getting closer to your local dealers best (discounted) price. Other costs are applicable either way (permit fees, etc)Then if you have a problem, and have to return it and pay freight again.......I'll just say that the internet price has to be pretty much of a savings to look like a good deal to me. You know, it's worth something to see it before you buy it.

Now, not being able to find a nice specimen locally is a different matter. My dealers stock all of the Police specimens. The internet is usually the ticket for expensive, different or non-plastic firearms.........but in my experience, it's not always much of a bargin.

Thanks for the replys. My biggest frustration is the lack of "Real" gunshops. I thought that I had found one, but the last time I was in there with my 4 YO son, the two yahoos working the counter were talking to another customer about how to get "Pigs" (not the four-legged kind either). That was the last time I went into that shop.

I saw a post on the WWG Redhawk modifications and I may go that route with a 45 Colt.
 
Deer Hunter

I was working in St. Pete last summer and found two great shops. Deer Hunter was just across the bay and a bit north of the highway. There was another called Castles or something close, on the highway that runs straight over to the coastal beaches. Sorry about not remembering the addresses, you can look them up. I bought a pristine Detective Special at Deer Hunter and got the best service I have ever seen. Got an Andrews holster for it at the gunshow in Lakeland. What a gun show! And I visited Accurate Plating and Weaponry, got to inspect all their different platings.
