I have a Smith and Wesson model 638 snubnose 38 Special revolver and a Ruger SP101 38/357 snubnose revolver. Both are accurate and a pleasure to shoot. I am thinking of buying on Gun Broker or GunsAmerica a Smith and Wesson 940 in 9mm, do any of you have any experience with this handgun, and if so how did you like it?

I bought one when they first came out. Initally I had a problem as the firing pin was too sharp, causing pierced primers on hot loads. I fixed it myself and it is extremely fast to load/unload and you don't loose much velocity with the short bbl.

I've heard of ones that had hard extraction, most likely due to rough chambers.

I call it a "pocket rocket".

Not pleasant to shoot

The thing kicks like crazy with that boot grip. It is not one for repeated practice with because of that. I usually get a sore hand after a practice session with it. Of course, that is mainly due to the factory 9mm loads I use having to have enough power to function a slide. I probably could load up some slighter loads one of these days.

Otherwise, I like it a lot. Very small, seemingly for a revolver, loads extremely fast with the moon clips. I have not had a problem with extraction whatsoever. No pierced primers. It is a solid little gun. Yep, I like it a lot.

The action is smooth and lets you get almost a single action let-off if you practice with it. For self-defense, the boot grips are great, since you will likely only get off one cylinder if that. For practice, I switch to a set of Pachmeyers.

The Doc is out now.
