2 weeks ago I sent a 41 I bought last 1995 to Smith for a few issues.

Free FEDEX to them.

Received a brand new barrel (Which was stamped "1". the old one was a "6" Yay me!)

Free FEDEX back.

This is only the second time I had to deal with Smith since I started shooting in the mid 90s. Just like first time, Smith took care of me.

I would grant that some issues shouldn't get out of the factory but at least the company is making a big effort to keep me happy. Speaking of happy, I can't wait to shoot my brand new F Comp 66 tomorrow!

As long as Smith continues to give me positive experiences with them there will be no Euro wunderautos in my safe.

I wish I had recieved this kind of service from S&W. When I called them about getting my 25-5 worked on I was told by the service dept that it was "junk" and don't bother sending it in, we won't work on it.

Lost a customer, they did.

Oh my gosh, sounds like two very different ends of a spectrum! What did you want them to do to your 25, I'm just wondering?

I honestly cannot believe that any responsible S&W employee would call the 25-5 "junk" or say not to send it in. Maybe the guy who answered the phone had just been fired for general nastiness and was getting in a few last licks.

Quite a few years back, I sent a K-22 that had been misfiring back to S&W with the request that they restore it to factory standard. I got a letter saying that they would do as requested and would reblue the gun for $17. Naturally, I sent the check. What they did was strip the gun to the frame and reassemble and refinish it with ALL NEW parts, including a new barrel and cylinder. The only charge was the $17 for "rebluing".

I doubt anyone, even S&W, will do that sort of thing today, but that is how they made their reputation for customer service.

Glad to hear of someone having a positive experience with S&W's service lately. Unfortunately, those seem to be dwindling.

I can. It seems that responsible employees are a dwindling resource at S&W.

Before the company signed the ban, I send in some e-mail with some questions and suggestions.

What I got back looked as if it had been written by a drunken monkey on crack, didn't address most of what I had raised, and was rather rude.

When I posted a reply asking about the things I hadn't heard about, I received an even snippier reply.

Wanderer,

My 1981 vintage 25-5 has over 6000 rounds and 20 years of use. It needs a general refubishing to tighten up the central locking system. And the cylinder center pin hole in the frame has ecome egg shaped. I wanted that corrected.
I also enquired about a new cylinder. Mine has oversized throats and the post pin barrel cylinders were made with tighter specs.

The service person I spoke to was absolutly no help at all, he told me there were no more cylinders available, and that my gun was junk and that they wouldn't do anything for it. In other words don't send it in.

I started a thread about this some months back that turned sour, but it's in the back pages somewhere. One of the posters suggested I contact Cylinder and Slide for help. I did, they told me no problem, they can fix everything, but the cylinder would depend on if they had one or not. So when the funds become available, I'll send it to C&S.
