I just bought one, an A4 Carbine, and think it would also be fun to get a match upper. Maybe even some of the other calibers, like the .50 Beowulf, .223 WSSM, .300 Whisper, etc.

I like 16" A3 uppers with the M-4 barrel cut and a lightweight barrel (want the unloaded weight of the rifle to be as close to 6 pounds as possible, less is better). I also like 20" barrels with the A1 profile.

This irks me because I used to know this but I sure as hell can't remember....what's the difference between A3 and A4?

In civvie terms, nothing, they both denote flattop.

As a military designation, the M-16A3 was full-auto flattop, and the M-16A4 is 3-round burst, flattop, with rail handguards IIRC.

The most fun is a dedicated .22LR upper that I put together. I used a nice lightweight barreled M16A1 upper, plugged the gas system, added a Ciener 22LR kit and an XS sight systems same plane rear sight to it. I figured that shooting between 25 and 50 yards, I didn't need a flat top or any elevation changes for the arperture.

For a more serious AR15, I like a flattop 16" with the midlength gas system the best. It gives you a longer sight radius than an M4/CAR type, but feels handier than the 20". The one below is a chrome lined RRA that got turned down with an A2 profile under the handguards to keep the weight down.

one that shoots 1 ragged hole 5 shot groups:D At least when I do my part.:cuss:
This is my match set-up.most definatly out shoots my ability.

For a fun plinker/general use/end of the world everybody for themselves as we know it kinda rifle, I'm gonna build me a 16" barrelled carbine someday, similar to DMK's, or an M4 profile gun.

Otherwise, I guess I'm sorta traditionalist, but then again that's influenced by my latest addiction. Make it a 20" A2.
