Some more MRP (AR15) Pics

That looks great, Zak. Is it yours? Can you provide details on the components?

I really like the MRP concept.

Steve

Yes, ah, sure...

MRP rifle-length receiver/upper/foreend
18" SPR-profile barrel (too heavy for my taste)
Vortex or A2 f/h (both are pictured)
Magpul rail covers
TA31 on TA51 (I prefer the TA11 as a general purpose optic)
Troy BUIS
An old Eagle lower
Falcon Ergogrip
Magpul M93A stock

All paint is Aluma-Hyde II.

With a NM-weight bolt carrier (and the LMT Enh. bolt), this is a reliable work-horse. I shot it in our annual AK vs. AR 3gun match and it ran perfect, while the AK I shot was short-stroking.

My plan is to get a 16" barrel and convert this into a Dissipator-esque rail rifle soon.

Tell me more about the optics on that rifle.....I have seen those in pics and from what I can tell they are made by trijicon....run about $1000 or so. What does the sight picture look like, is it magnified, and do the crosshairs glow, light up the whole sight picture, or just in low light conditions.....?

That is a Trijicon TA31 ACOG on a TA51 flat-top mount. I actually prefer the TA11 which is slightly different.

TA11: 3.5x, 2.4" eye relief, 28.9 ft at 100 yds, 14oz
TA31: 4x, 1.5" eye relief, 36.8 ft and 100 yards, 10oz.

The reticles has a fiber-optic and tritium lit portion, and then an unlit BDC below.

They also have triangle and chevron variants besides the donut model.

Like this during the day (but clear)

Zak, I'm in the planning stages for my first build and really like the look of your piece. Great job and wonderful pics, too.

Any idea when LMT is supposed to debut their cheaper extruded MRP? I like the quick-change feature, though I doubt I'd ever use it. Sure are pricey, ain't they? Think they'll ever offer barrels in .50 Beowulf or .458 SOCOM? :D

How's the paint holding up? I was thinking about using Bowflage spraypaint from the sporting stores as it's easily removable with mineral spirits.

Overall, very sexy rifle.

PS-> How do you like that RAID pack? Been thinking about getting one for the longest time but can't decide on that or one of the Camelbak 'maximized' pack with individual pockets. That CM Talon looks good, as does the BFM, but I just can't say for sure without handling them in person. Just need something for toting stuff back and forth to work, maybe some day hiking and the like. Goes without saying that it has to function well for your general SHTF situs and TEOTWAWKI. ;)

Cheaper MRP? Bahahaha!!!

The Leitner-Wise 499 was based on the MRP, so some of those barrels exist. The 6.8SPC barrels are currently being made. One more caliber is supposed to be made also, but we don't know what it is yet.

The Aluma-Hyde II holds up pretty well, except when it's heated up a lot. When the barrel gets too hot to grab, its AHII gets a little tacky.

I think next time I'd use Norrell's Moly-Resin or K-G Kote.

The pack is a Kifaru Marauder, which is great for heavy loads in the small pack.

Kifaru? I shoulda known considering the ACOG and MRP.

Just can't afford that kinda mula for a day pack.

Still, sexy gear to be appreciated. Thanks for the pics.

Let's see if I can answer all these questions.

I prefer the TA11 for the reasons stated in this thread over on AR15.com
Trijicon ACOG TA11F vs. TA31F
The TA11 family is 3.5x with 2.4" optimum eye relief, narrow field of view, and is brighter.

The TA11 takes up less of your field of view, so scanning with your eyes at 1x is easier (then you look "through" the scope to acquire the target). The TA11 has more "flexible" eye relief, which means your head can be more off to the side and more forward or back and you can still see the target and reticle through the scope. This is useful for fast shooting or shooting from awkward positions.

The TA31 family is 4x with 1.5" opimum eye relief, wider field of view, and will be slightly darker. It is physically smaller than the TA11.

The 4X will be better for scanning an area, or locating adjacent targets due its wider field of view and higher magnification.

The 3.5X will be faster to acquire targets that you see with your eyes looking over the gun, mainly because the eye relief is more flexible.

ETA: If you want the lightest weight and smallest package over any of the optical concerns, the TA31 would be a better choice.

I like the donut because it obscures less of the target than the triangle. Opinion is split between the chevron vs. the donut. I think that comes down to personal preference. Most 3Gunners seem to prefer the donut, but at least one top shooter like the chevron.

The pics most likely are the CA coast. It was linked to from the "Big ACOG thread" tacked over on AR15 - not my picture.

I bought the Kifaru for hauling around 1000 rounds of ammo and other gear in the ITRC match earlier this year. It worked great. The full panel access is a huge advantage.
