I thought you guys might like to see the .348 (Model 71 Winchester) that we inherited a while back. Used to belong to my wife's grandfather. I posed it along with some original Remington ammo (no longer made) and some vintage red plaid Woolrich. Ahh, the good old days. You can see the gun was a user. Fitting for someone who hunted as much as he did. I only got to hunt with the man for a few years, but saw several deer taken with this gun. I'm hoping to take it to Maine for bears in the near future. Ammo is getting very hard to come by now. Only Winchester Silvertips are available. Enjoy.

What do you mean "was a user"?

With that great Lyman rear sight that your grandfather-in-law put on it, that old rifle need not be apologized for to any hunter in the woods!

Hornady still offers their .348 200g flatpoint bullet, which a handloader can stuff enough 4350 behind to get an honest 2500 fps out of. That looks a whole lot like .35 Whelen/.356 Winchester or almost even .350 Remington Magnum ballistics, out of a handy lever-action rifle. Can't beat it.

Lyman makes a good mould for the bullet, and Barnes offers two FP SP bullet weights in .348-- 220g and 250g.

Great stuff on that rifle and load here.

Frankly, I'd load up that rifle, that coat, and some of that ammo, and take it hog hunting today, if I had a chance to go. :)

Great rig. An utter classic, made of machined (not cast) parts, back when Winchester handmade their rifles. Thanks for sharing it with us. :)

Matt,
I was saying that with pride, not apologizing. The man who owned that gun USED it -- a LOT That's all I meant. And thanks for the reloading component info!

i love vintage hunting stuff, the quality was there and it was all made in the good ol' USA. now alot of stuff is imported:barf:

The Model 71 Win is on my will have someday list. I had a chance at a beatifull like new one that came out of an estate sale in Canada a couple of years ago but I didn't have the $1400.00 laying around at the time to buy it.

There are several of them at the Bailey gun store in Bailey CO. And the guy knows what they are and what they'll bring.

Darn the luck!

:) :)

Gorgeous rifle my man cheerish it!

Question:

Has the old girl been reblued? Or did Grandpaw use a sling quite a bit? Most older well used lever guns have the blueing worn off at the reciever. At least all of mine do.

I don't believe anything has been re-blued or refinished and I do recall it being carried on a sling. The stock finish is pocketed and particularly worn off around the butt-plate. The blueing is still there, but definitely worn. He faithfully oiled and stored all his guns carefully. I'll attest to that because he yelled at me once for getting my fingerprints on the barrel of this very gun after he'd cleaned it! I'll post some more close-up receiver pictures when I get a few minutes.
