Son teaches dad to shoot

So the weekend that my younger brother comes to visit is the same weekend that I have a cookout with a number of coworkers from the job. After about an hour, my brother says that he is going to go pop tin cans out by the rock pile (should be called gravel pile but..) and could he take one of the older boys with him. I told him as long as it’s ok with his parents. Now me and my brother worked on the same farm as kids helping Pappy and Me’maw for the summer and each were expected to help fill the stew pot, drive farm trucks, work the fields on our own from a young age. So this wasn’t anything new to me and I trust my brother with new shooters of any age with any firearm. He’s a natural teacher if I have ever seen one. So, after a while I could hear him popping away at the rock pile and made no mind of it. At about 3 in the afternoon, my brother and new friend come back, clean and lock up his gear. My brother’s new friend goes and tells his dad all about making tin cans dance and such and asks if he can do it again some time. So the dad comes over a little while later and we get to talking about shooting. Come to find out that he has never shot a gun before and is not sure that he could take his son shooting because he doesn’t know what to do. I assured him that it’s not that hard but shooting is for responsible people, and that I would be more than happy to teach him, but I suggested that he talk to my brother and see if he would take him out shooting, because of his ways around new shooters. So to make a long story short, I walk over to the rock pile about an hour and half later, to find all three of them having a ball making tin cans dance, spinners spin and making soda cans filled with water explode. I sat back, and watched a bit, and the son advised his dad to hold high over the spinner because it’s farther back than the tin cans, and to keep his finger off the trigger till he’s ready to shoot. All I could do was smile, this was all on my brother, and he was smiling too.

Roger called this afternoon and asked if he and his son could come out this weekend and go shooting again, and to keep a look out for a good 22 for him.

One at a time folks, but sometimes you get two for the price of one.

Awesome story, makes me grin . I think we do more for the rkba cause every time we bring in a new shooter, than when we do anything else at all. Plus its a lot of fun.
