So, does the 1st Amendment only apply to quill pens?

Yes, you would be wrong. "shall not be infringed", means exactly what is says. Anyone of legal age, that is not otherwise prohibited by prior acts, should be allowed to carry, without a permit of any kind. We should not need a permit from government, to exercise an inherent right.

Nor do I, it was a horrible tragedy, but we must not allow rampant emotionalism rule us, and take steps to prevent them further, that will work, which gun control against lawful gun owners, will not. We need to look at the mental health system in this nation first and foremost, to facilitate proper identification and treatment of people with mental health problems. BTW, your labeling them as "crazies" doesn't help.

And yet, according to every statistic on the issue, violent crime is on the decline in America..............

And Constitutional concealed carry, along with better mental health work, will do a lot to get us in the right direction, piling on more laws and restrictions on law abiding citizens will not, if it did, Chicago would be a utopia, instead of a slaughter house.

I sincerely hope you continue to serve, but that service also includes standing up for the rights of everyone in your city, including lawful gun owners. Carbondale has suffered some horrible black marks in recent years, several shootings, violence on campus, and gun violence, even from "high profile" individuals stolen firearms. I hope you have great success in cleaning up Carbondale, before people not only stop shopping there, but stop sending their kids and tuition dollars to SIUC.

Best of luck, you've got a lot of work ahead of you, take care.

NOTE:On the "High profile" individuals thing, the Carbondale Chief of Police had his handgun stolen from his car, finally reported it, and had the report buried in an Animal Control file, hoping nothing would come of it, then the gun was used in a murder in Carbondale..............
