Interesting tidbit in ;O.K. Carter's piece today:

On average, the Department of Public Safety gets maybe a hundred concealed-handgun applications a week. After the Virginia Tech tragedy, it was running up to 700 a day.

Assuming his figures are accurate that's a pretty stout increase. I wonder how long it might have been sustained?
 
CHL/CCW license applications typically spike for a short time after a major incident, not necessarily just gun-related incidents. Y2K and 9/11 produced a spike in applications. It would be interesting to see if renewals matched the initial spike 4-5 years down the road (or less for those of you in more restrictive states). Somebody with research time on his or her hands...?
 
Well, the cool thing is that Gov. Perry has sent a message to the Legislature (now in session) that he wants all restrictions on where CHL's can carry firearms removed without exception. This would include courts, schools, and colleges. Sounds good to me. People here in Texas that take the time to get a CHL shouldn't have any restrictions on where they can carry anyway. This may make it through the Legislature this session.:D
 
Great news regarding Perry's plan to lift carry restrictions. I love this state as well! The only problem I have is the Cost of your initial CHL.

In these times ($3 Gal. gas) not everyone can plunk down $140.

The cost may stop some people but many are just too darn lazy to do what little it takes to get the license.
I have friends and friends of friends who say they want to get the CHL.
I 'm not a CHL instructor but I've offered to run them through the course on my range, and I'll even supply the ammo and gun free if they need it, to prepare them for the CHL class and shooting.
Almost NONE of them "can find the time". Some people are lazy beyond belief.:banghead:
 
While we all applaud the Governor's comments,

that's all they were. He doesn't have a plan. I believe he was only expressing his thoughts.

And if you know anything about Texas state government, then you know the Governor doesn't wield a great deal of power. Almost all of that is in the Legislature.
