Well I hate to throw out more ideas (A or B? Well I choose C!) but, have you considered building a Ruger 10/22?

You can build it to look just like an AR, MP5, Bullpup and the list goes on! Its a whole new firearm. They tend very durable and high quality (depending on parts you buy). Again, depending on parts, you can make them super accurate.

You can build its for the same price as a GSG but have fun doing it.

Con: Its not an AR. Spikes is great for that extra trigger time on a great platform.

Check out RimFireCentral for Tacticool and Ultimates as well as endless supply of information!

I'd rather have my .22 upper on an AR lower than a 10/22. In fact, I sold the 10/22.

For one thing, nobody's saying you can't put a separate lower on it. If you want a "whole new firearm", you can have it that way. Of course, there's a lot to be said for leveraging AR upgrades like $200 buttstocks, $200 triggers, etc., so you get to use them with the .22.

For another, the AR is so wonderfully overbuilt for a .22, it goes for a much longer time between cleanings.

Furthermore, the 10/22's ergos SUCK, no matter how much money you throw at it. The safety button is in the worst possible place, the mag release is, also. The magazines SUCK, compared to the AR .22LR mag designs. They suck to load, they suck to clean, and they often suck when in use (unless you score a good one). The AR .22 mags are easy to clean, have light spring tension for easy loading, and mine has been 100% reliable, brick after brick, with EVERY type of junk ammo I've stuffed into it. I've never seen a 10/22 that was.

The AR is MUCH quicker and easier to clean, from the breech, than a 10/22. There's no spring wrestling when you reassemble it, and no tools are required to do a complete cleaning. The AR cleans like an AR -- it's made for field cleaning in battlefield conditions, and it lives up to that.

The 10/22 has its place (though not in my gunsafe), but the .22LR AR is in another league.

I'll reiterate: if you're recommending a 10/22 or somesuch, it can only be because you haven't had a .22LR AR upper.

Personally I'd go for the GSG-5,

I have never really like the .22 uppers, just does not fascinate me, In the end whatever you feel like you want to get, try to find a range that rents these and try them out, everyone has their own feel when shooting.

Armed Bear has his points and made the same point I made but made it like he was running for president. The AR Upper is a GREAT addon.

I disagree with his calling of a 10/22 CRAP or with the need to clean a 10/22 more often than an AR upper. Do your own research on 10/22s and you will see they are as reliable as the .22lr ammo you will use. (Magazines included!)

The OP is considering a GSG, which IMO is no better (actually less fun) than a 10/22 that has been modified. You have much more "stuff" to choose from when working with a 10/22 vs the GSG-5. Triggers, hammers, bolts, springs, sears, extractors, barrels (Threaded, SBR'ed, Colored) as well as Stocks.

It all depends on how you plan on using the new .22LR. Do you want a way to utilize your AR for cheaper, than get the upper. Do you want a unique target gun that can be its own toy, consider a NEW firearm (GSG or 10/22).

The mags cost more, but the GSG is just a lot of fun to shoot. I've got several AR's and could have gone with an upper, but style has to be worth something.

here is from my original post.

(just no 10/22s please, it dosen't make sense to me to get a second)

on top of that, i just don't like the 10/22 all that much. :)

i am wanting a fun pratice gun to plink with, and inn the case of the Spikes, cheap AR pratice.

Go with the upper, it will translate better to the full power AR.

If you don't go that route I can stress highly enough the training value of a match grade single shot bolt action .22LR with a good trigger, and aperture sights. Get a shooting jacket, a good loop sling and learn to shoot positions. The small bore precision game will really improve your shooting skills.

i have a savage MK II rimfire that will fire one hole groups at 50yd with bulk ammo, so the bolt side is covered.

having the ability to fire a large number of rounds in a short time with little cost is just appealing:evil:

Then Upper IMO. You have a bolt you have a 10/22 (and dont like it) but the AR Upper is a fine upgrade.

Resurrecting a dead post again, sorry! But I've searched the net for where to buy one of these Spikes .22 uppers and I can't find one? I am getting an AR on Thursday and would be interested in getting a quality .22 upper for it.
