I have a 629 Smith that I took a set of Hogue open back grips off of and replaced them with a set of Pachmayr grips that are smaller at the top. On one side of the gun, there is a large black spot that looks as if the Hogue grips kinda melted to the gun. I've used different solvents and even used car polishing compound to no effect. Any ideas to get this “splotch” off?

I (lightly!!!) use a small patch of ScotchBrite (the green raspy stuff) to keep my brushed stainless tidy. :D

This does not work well for beadblast finish!

You can use some paper and masking tape to shield the rest of the gun, avoiding a full cleanup afterwards.

Try it on a hidden area of the grip, get a feel for the grit (it is more aggressive when fresh).

Make sure everything's clean afterwards.

Hey, that ScotchBrite worked. Didn't do much at first, but I squirted some Hoppe's Elite on it and then the splotch started coming off. Looks great now. It even took the powder residue off the end of the cylinder. Thanks for the tip.
