Hello,
I am a big fan of Springfield Armory and just recently purchased an XDM 3.8 Compact in 9mm. I went to the range earlier today and fired 150 rounds through it. The ergonomics are great, the size is perfect and the firearm is extremely accurate. However, I noticed a problem when the slide didn't lock to rear after the last round was fired. At first, it happened only occasionally and then it became pretty regular. Since this never happened when I shoot any of my other weapons (Springfield Armory XD9 sub-compact, Glock 23, M&P40), I became suspicious and started experimenting. It seems no matter if I put 1, 5 or 15 rounds in the magazine, the last round refused to kick the slide to the rear. Other than the slide not locking to the rear, the weapon is fires flawlessly. Initially, I thought the problem was with the magazines (yes, I tried both), then I thought the ammo (using new American Eagle 124 grain ball). As a last resort I asked a firearm instructor to watch me shoot (to ensure I wasn’t doing something stupid) and then take a few shots for himself and the same problem happened to him.

Of course, I called Springfield Armory when I got home and their first thought was a faulty magazine (magazine does manually locks to rear) or “shooter error.” When advised the weapon performed the same with 2 different experienced shooters, they recommended putting another 150 rounds through it to allow some additional break in time.

Any thoughts? Comments?

Thank you

Maybe the recoil spring? If it is too heavy for the load you are using for break-in it may well require some more shooting to compress the spring a little more.;)

the last round lock up is simple mechanics, can you push up slide lock to lock the slide? see why the mag spring failed to push the slide lock up... try with empty mag and pull slide?
