I know there were some pistols briefly marketed under the Commander name, but know almost nothing about them except that they became the "Champion" as we know it now.
Were any/all of them LW frames? Two tone? How can you tell what you're looking at (meaning I'm looking at one on the net and can't touch it)
Can anybody fill me in?
Cheers, TF

the "Commander" name is copy written by Colt...it belongs to them...i would think Colt and Springfield had "words" about naming

Colt "Commanders" all have LW frames, their "Combat Commanders" have steel frames

the easiest way to tell, would be to ask the seller

Colt's Commander has a 4 1/4" barrel.

Springfield's Champion has a 4" barrel.

I believe Colt has changed terminology here. They now are all Commanders. The lightweight ones are now designated as Lightweight Commanders. Steel ones are simply Commanders. I don't think they use Combat Commander anymore.

Originally, all Colt Commanders had aluminum frames, when they added a steel frame model it needed a special name, hence Combat Commander. Now, most of Colt's Commanders are steel with the exception to the rule being the Lightweight model.

Older models were marked as 9mmepiphany states.

Really asking whether anyone knew anything about the Springfield guns... is there a way to tell whether one is a LW or not from the pix. I know about the Colts; I own several of both. Too late to ask the seller; just trying to pick up a little gun savvy from the Springfield experten...I think the "Commander" name was not copyrighted at the time by Colt and the Springfield iteration was probably the reason it is now; it was the first run of mid size Springfields. (I have owned two Champions as well).
