I was looking at a Springfield M1A manufactured just before Clinton's so-called "Assault Weapons Ban," with a serial number in the 81K range. My question concerns the number of USGI parts used by Springfield in assembling a rifle that is 17 years old. Back then, were all the parts USGI? If not, approximately what percentage were cast aftermarket parts versus the newly manufactured Springfield M1A rifles of today.

You well need to inspect the rifle for gi parts. There are plenty of older SA's with few gi parts. Age does not guarantee gi parts. Most well have a gi trigger, GC and FH, you need to inspect the bolt and op-rod. My 15k serial# has a gi trigger block, GC and FH, the bolt and op-rod is SA. My 50k serial# is all gi.

I have found the same possibilities as madcratebuilder.

Look over the specific rifle of interest and see what she is built with to be sure.

the odds of finding GI parts is in your favor, but not a guarantee.

I have a Bush rifle built before the ban that has less gi parts in her makeup vs a post ban rifle of same type.

Most were put together out of whatever parts SAI had in the parts bin at any given time, from what I reckon.
