Hello,

Was at the range firing a Stevens 87A .22 rifle. After 2 successful shots, the rifle failed to fire any more ammo. I took it apart twice at the range to no avail.

I suspect a broken firing pin. If anyone has one of these guns and can pull the bolt assembly, I sure would appreciate it. With the bolt assembly in your hand including the bolt, firing pin and hammer/spring assembly when I look down from the top onto the firing pin which sits in a notch, the end of the firing pin does not protrude past the bolt face, it is about 2 mm inside the notch.

As I look at this, it appears the firing pin would not have length to strike the rim primer. If it were cocked, I would expect the firing pin to be behind the bolt face, but holding it assembled in my hand I assume it is not in the cocked position.

The firing pin is a $25 part on Numrich so I want to be sure on this before I buy.

Thanks!

Mine appears to be 4 9/16 inches. I 'think' it should be 1/8 to 3/16 inch longer.
Please if someone can pull their firing pin and confirm with me I would appreciate it!

Thanks
Matt

Well, it certainly isn't broke that I can see.
If it worked before and then suddenly stopped?
I'd look for something else.

Make sure the bolt & breech-face are not gummed up with powder fouling and holding it out of battery.

+1 on rcmodel.

The firing pin should protrude enough to fire a round under impact from the striker, but does not protrude when setting static. Either something is preventing the Fpin from moving free, or the striker is not making proper contact with the Fpin.
Make sure all the screws holding the magazine lifter assy is tight.

If someone has one they can measure I would appreciate it. Mine appears to have a fresh break on the tip end (right side of the picture) but I am not sure. The way the firing pin sits in the bolt, it would be impossible I believe for it to strike the round when assembled.
The gun was clean prior to this range trip. It fired two rounds and then stopped. It feeds and ejects correctly, just doesnt fire.

Although I don't have one to measure and compare, I have worked on a few Savage/Stevens/ Springfield, using that style action and firing pin. It is very difficult to determine if that firing pin is broken by using your picture.
You have a couple choices, either wait and see if someone can give you a dimension, or just bite the bullet and buy another firing pin and see if that fixes the problem.

You do have another site that has the firing pin listed, but the prices are close regardless.

Smitty, would it help if I showed the whole group with the firing pin installed? There is a 'T' the pin that locks into the hammer and the blade of the firing pin sits in a groove on the bolt. When this is all placed together, the firing pin sits about 3/16 inch back from the face of the bolt. I dont see how it would be able to strike the shell, but when assembled, all this action is not visible so I am hoping someone has this common rifle and would take the time to measure their firing pin over all length.

If my memory serves me correct, you should be able to slide the Fpin back and forth in the bolt by hand, to tell if it can protrude enough to fire, and if it doesn't, then it may indeed need to be replaced. It should be that simple.

Got lucky and found a firing pin at the Indy 1500 gun show for $10.
Installed it today. The old one was definitely broken at the tip.
Looks like I am all better. Only thing left to do is a range trip.

Thanks all!
