A friend just brought me his Springfield XD .45 ACP pistol, hoping that I could resolve a problem that he somehow caused while reassembling the gun.

This one has me a bit stumped. Basically, the slide of this gun is stuck part of the way to the rear, and it appears that the feed ramp of the barrel has somehow been driven under the locking block on the receiver.

My friend says that this is the second time he has caused this problem with this gun, and that he had to have a gunsmith fix it the first time. He also reports that he has had no other issues with this pistol.

Anyone see this before? If so, what is the best way to fix it?

I've seen this before.

If you look at it, you will see that the feed ramp is ahead of the locking lug. It usually happens when some one is trying to impress a crowd on how fast they can field strip and reassemble the XD. It's going to take some tinkering but he'll get it unlocked.

Well, I currently have the gun in my care, as he has clearly given up on figuring this out himself. He asked if I could fix it for him. Short of hitting the back of the slide with some considerable force, I can't begin to think of an intelligent way to un-jam this gun.

To be fair, I don't own a Springfield myself, and have never encountered such an issue in the Glocks. I'd also fully believe that my friend was trying to assemble his gun too quickly.

The FIX

I'm trying to recall how I fixed the jam. If I remember correctly. I belive I removed the slide release, witch took some grunting, and worked at it from there. it took me about an hour and then the slide just slid off before I realized what I did. You are right on your assumption about reassembling it to quickly and once you got it apart you'll see what I was talking about.
Good luck and keep me posted.

I ran into the same problem upon reassembling my XD45, after initial panic attack and deciding not to run to gunsmith, I found the following video concerning problem:

Decided there had to be a less aggressive approach and eventually found the following:
-pull guide rod out far enough to slide open end wrench or crescent wrench behind end cap on guide rod
-strike wrench with hammer as if trying to extend guide rod

Should pop loose fairly easily

Apparently caused by guide rod and spring not being centered on reassembly

Hope that helps Dan

Here is the post from a XD forum:

Using a crescent wrench, close the wrench over the exposed spring guide rod. The wrench does not need to be tight. It does, however, need to rest against the disc at the base of the guide rod.

Using a hammer or mallet - firmly strike the crescent wrench as close to where it's attached to the spring guide rod.

(You'll need to keep the firearm off the floor/surface while striking the wrench, of course, which means the first few whacks might not cut it as you work out the mechanics)

After a few good whacks the slide simply pops forward!

Apparently this method temporarily releases spring tension against the barrel just long enough to unjam everything.

Then, remove the slide from the frame and reposition the spring guide rod - Properly Centered This Time - and reassemble.
