Springfield XDm 3.8 9mm

I recently purchased an XDm 3.8 9mm. Used to quilify for my CCW and have been shooting it a LOT. Mine is not the compact but rather the full size grip, 19 round mag. Made in 2011. Great shooter, came with a lot of useful accessories, has a match barrel. It is quickly replacing my PT 92 AFS as my fav range piece. I am still a revolver sort of guy but find myself with quite a few semi autos lately. Any other XDm, XDs, XD, or Springfield owners out there interested in discussing this? I am cutious about replacing the front sight on this possibly with a fiber optic, I have been told that is a bit of work with this gun.

They are a royal PITA. You either have to buy or know someone with a proper sight pusher to remove and replace these sights. I had a XD guru do mine for me. Places like Dawson precision supply a little punch to use, but I see know way to use that with a dead blow and not cause permanent damage to your slide. This is definitely a case where you need the proper tool or pay the right person who has the proper tool.

Glad you like the XDM. Mine is a 3.8 compact bi-tone. Love the versatility, basically two guns in one. Most accurate pistol for me thus far. My next upgrade will be a drop in trigger kit from Powder River Precision.

I have a 3.8 Compact chambered in .40 caliber. If your 9mm works as well as my .40 then you will be pleased. It will eat anything I feed it (never fed it Tulammo and don't intend to) and it never hiccups. I am a Range Safety Officer at a local range and the only XD/XDm I have seen malfunction is when a guy was shooting handloads in his full sized XD .45. He locked up the slide tight with the round just a few millimeters out of battery.

I like all the extra features such as the visual and tactile cocked striker and loaded chamber indicators, grip safety and changeable backstrap. I also think they are about as easy to field strip as it gets and you don't have to pull the trigger to field strip. Winning! They are tough, accurate and have a great trigger. Oh, did I meniton you could find magazines for them weeks after other brands had sold out?

I removed the rear sight on mine. I used a heavy-duty padded vice, a brass drift and a big hammer.

This is my EDC gun and I installed a C-More dot sight on it. It’s very fast out of the holster and between targets. I don’t notice the extra bulk of the sight when I’m packing it.



I installed TFO sights on my XD45.



If I didn’t want to use a dot sight, that’s what I’d recommend.

I replaced the sights on my XDm 3.8" .45 with XS Big Dot Tritiums.
The original sights were really on there! Especially the front sight.
I laid the slide on a piece of two-by-four on a concrete floor so there would be little give.
I held the slide in place by kneeling on it using a knee pad.
I duct taped the tip of a flathead screw driver that just fit into width of the dovetail slots.
Then banged the h..l out of the sights with a three pound hammer and the screw driver. (Took a lot of banging)
I drifted the sights from right to left (from the ejection port side to the solid side).
The slide itself was not marred at all, but the slide is stainless. A coated slide may lose coating inside the dovetail if done this way.
The old sights have some slight marring where they took the hits, but they are still useable.
After installing the Big Dots I colored them for better contrast.
