Square butt vs. Round butt

I tried a search and couldn't find one, I'm sure I just missed it, but.....

How do you tell the difference in a square butt and round butt S&W revolver. I just acquired a 586 and don't know which one it is.....the grip is round on the bottom....does that constitute round? also, what is the difference in square vs. round butt models? Is one worth more, better, etc?

I have a 686 (same as your 586 but stainless steel) and it is a round butt. It is a 686-5. Some of the early models may have been square butt, but all new S&W's are round butt.

If you go to this website, it will show you what your gun should look like if you take the grips off.

are you not being a bit intimate?? i have a round butt ( more than 1) but i will sit on my #65 & be square.
