Squirrel Hunting Accident

Squirrels are tough as shoe leather so anything less than a 12ga with 2 shot don't tenderize them. I know my son used his inline .50 with prb on one this fall. mm mm good and tough! lol

Back east in the hill country of KY, TN, WVA, VA,and GA. most of us hillbillys grew up ahuntin' squirrels with a 12 ga.. Low brass, 1 oz, loads in 4's,5's,or 6's would fill the bill, and usually you'd come awalkin' out of the woods with a "squirrel belt". Early on most of us were trying to put food on the table and that there 12, wether it be a single or one of the fancy doubles, would make sure there was something in the pot.

As for the guy shootin' off his finger, he didn't have much sense now did he!

My favorite squirrel getters are a couple of scoped Savage 24 combination guns. One is a .22LR/.410, the other a .22WMR/20gauge. Both wear low power (1-4X) variable scopes. Shotgun barrel for squirrels up in the trees, and the rimfires for targets with a good backstop.

Here in Illinois on public land (like where this kid was) you can't use a rifle, only a shotgun. He's a young guy, maybe the 12 gauge was the only shotgun he had. I only have a 12 gauge. I've gone squirrel hunting with it.

"...too many pellets to clean out..." Only if the pellets are in the meat. That means they didn't penetrate. Not often an issue.
