I really didn't expect that resistance would be higher in the county then in St Louis city.

County seeks court order to block gun law

St. Louis County plans to seek a court order that would prevent it from issuing permits for concealed weapons. Officials said Tuesday they hope to obtain an injunction before a state Supreme Court decision allowing for such permits takes effect.

County Executive Charlie Dooley on Tuesday ordered officials to collect information on the potential costs of issuing permits. The county would challenge the law allowing the permits as an unfunded mandate that violates the state constitution. Officials expect to have the cost data together by the end of the week.

"We have real costs - for fingerprinting and personnel," County Counselor Patricia Redington said.

In a letter to the County Council, Dooley quoted a 1992 council resolution declaring that widespread permitting of concealed weapons increases the possibility of violence, accidental death and injury. "I am strongly opposed to letting this happen in St. Louis County," Dooley wrote.

Two questions:

- Will St. Louis county residents be able to get a permit in another county?

- Will the bill making it's way through the legislature now, to "Hancock Proof" CCW, (Hancock Ammendment making unfunded mandates unconsitiutional) make St. Louis county's request for a court order moot?

I foresee Centre Co., PA rolling in the bucks for some time over this.

Give me a break...In Arkansas we pay $25 to cover Fingerprinting, and before you say it takes someone away from doing "real" work, go look in sometimes and see if they have any downtime. When I went to get Fingerprinted the ladies in the office were just talking and hanging out. If they want to spend less money let the people defend themselves legally and stop spending money in courts saying its costing money.

i cant believe some of those sheriffs are complaining that the generous permit fee will not pay a 12 dollar an hour clerk to fingerprint someone and take their form for 10 minutes!
oh wait, i can believe it, because its motivated by anti-gun bigotry
makes sense now.....

My Arizona license is up for renewal so this afternoon I went in to get fingerprinted, and then forwarded the package to the Department of Public Safety (DPS) in Phoenix for processing. This involves doing background checks, printing out the new license, laminating it, and mailing it back to me.

Total cost: A $50.00 fee plus two .37-cent postage stamps.

But it costs twice that in Missouri to do the same thing?

Sure ………….

Don’t think I’d want to live in St. Louis County. Cost of living is way too much for me.

The really funny thing is that every County Sheriff in Missouri is already set up to run background checks and issue a purchase permit for handguns. I think the permit fee is $10.00 per permit. :D

These people in counties, such as St. Louis, which are wanting to opt out of issueing the permits are really showing their ignorance. :banghead: It makes me wonder if they have even read the law; but then, perhaps they can't read. Wait 'till they discover Pennsylvania and Florida. :neener:

Perhaps if everyone that is forced to send their money out of state for a permit sent a letter informing them of the fact they will do a little simple math and discover the thousands of dollars they are losing.

It would not surprise me to see our legislature amend the ccw law in a way that prohibits Mo. residents from carrying on an out of state permit.

If that were to happen, it seems also possible that each county could make it very difficult for a Mo resident with a PA permit to come around and get a valid Mo permit. This assumes that a Mo county would know whether or not a particular Mo resident has a PA permit.

Desertdog hit the nail on the head. Unfunded mandate? Oh, ok. We know how to fix that. Pass a new ccw law without the backround/fingerprinting/liscencing features like VT. has. In the meantime, I`ll go for an out of state permit.

Do your own background check

Can we pay for our own State and FBI finger print background check and submit the result with the CCW application and get the permit? No cost to the county.

Ahhh!...My beloved hometown of St. Louis. :barf:
That's why I live in the middle of the state now, and have applied for the Penn. license.
You have to understand the Missouri Sheriffs system. In many cases these are tyrannical little men who run their county like feudal fiefdoms...believe me, I know.
More than 50% of them will not issue an "open" permit when you go to get your handgun purchase permit. The will require you to put on the application the type of handgun, serial number, where purchased, etc., all in direct violation of state law.
It is a background check, and thus all they need by law is your personal information, and what you're buying the handgun for.

did we expect less

you know no matter what a study showed they werent going to do it...but you know it is great that all the people that come into the city from surrounding counties will carry ..AND THEY CANT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT,, and the out of state lisc...cant do anything about it...the law itself stands it is just how you are going to be able to go about getting your permit...out of state here we come...spend our dollars in another state for the same privledge....lets see turning down funds that to me isnt a very smart thing to do for us taxpayers...maybe they need voted out...time will tell
