Started my Revolver Collection Today

I compared the GP-100 to the S&W 686 today (new and used models) as well as the performance center 627...and honestly I found the trigger on the GP-100 to be smoother than all of the new Smiths and just as good (to me) as an older pre-lock 686 that I handled. In short, I feel like I got a great revolver at a very reasonable price.

I also picked up a new 642 for pocket carry. I'm pretty sure this gun weighs less than my wife's key chain... :D

Perhaps the perfect combination..

What should I get next?

Just gimmie yer money an.. Say, that Ruger Redhawk looks pretty nice. Or how about that S&W 629. Or maybe your "inner cowboy" would like any number of single action guns out there.

A Wolf spring kit. The GP100 comes alive with a little bit lighter springs. Just don't go too light that you start getting light primer strikes.

As far as the next revolver, how about a SA one for target shooting or hunting. Blackhawks are pretty tough to beat.

It's all a matter of taste of course, but I'd look for some of the older S&W revolvers. The old N frame models were great guns.
Whatever you pick, enjoy your new collection.
 
Looks to me like you need a good target gun. You can't beat a K Frame S&W, pre-lock models. If you can find one, scare up an older S&W Model 14 (.38special) or Model 17 (.22lr) for tons of range fun.

Careful, revolvers are addictive. I started out with pretty much the same 2 that you have, except mine was a 4" GP.

I'm now up to 14 revolvers.
 
Very nice acquisition CT. As has been said--revolvers are addictive. I have added 3 more in just the past two months. As far as adding to your collection I would have to agree on a single action next.
 
I've got the GP-100 in .357 Mag and you won't be disappointed in your decision. They are an excellent gun.
 
No revolver collection is complete without multiple Smiths and Colts. Find some and just start buying...:D
 
I would also recommend a S&W K frame. M14, M19, M66...any or all of them over time. If you can find one to shoot before buying, you'll see why they come so highly recommended.

A 4" SS GP100 started off my revolver collection so I'd say you're off to a good start :D Maybe look into a bigger bore for your next revolver like a 44 mag, especially if you reload!
 
As a collector, I like to be diverse. I would say buy some sort of older Colt, maybe a .357, that will get you a collectable, shootable revolver.

Other ones I'd look at:
-Smith model 29 or 629
-Smith K22
-Colt "Snake" guns like Python, Anaconda, Cobra
-A snub/carry: Smith Airweight or Colt Det. Special, or even a Ruger LCR
-Colt Police "Positive, Positive Special" etc
-Ruger Security Six
-A single action of some kind
-An antique revolver like an authentic 1851 Navy

Then, you'll have a killer collection. :evil:

There's more than trigger pull and cosmetics. Tolerances are things you can't see -- chamber throating, B/C gap, and so forth. But the GP-100 is an astounding gun (almost as good as a Security-Six).

Taurus revolvers are GREAT guns...to avoid. They're beautiful, but the tolerances are often neglected.

I own all of them and they are good ones to collect.

Quick Update

I took both guns to the range today for basic testing. Both worked perfectly.

The Ruger GP-100 produced 1-2 inch groups, double action, at 25 yards from standing. This is good for me. At 75 feet all shots were within the 7 ring, single action. All shooting was done with .38 special ammo. Shooting .38s through this big gun was incredibly easy. There is virtually no recoil.

The 642 was surprisingly accurate. All shots were taken at 25 feet from standing. Groups were 3-4 inches. The first few shots were high but once I got a feel for the trigger everything was on target. I will say that with +P ammo I really needed to maintain a firm two handed grip on the gun.

Both guns exceeded my expectations. The 642 will become my primary carry and there is a possibility that the GP will overtake the G17 for HD duty.
 
Great choice! I helped a young woman pick out a revolver a while back and she chose the GP 4". The trigger was so nice I almost bought one myself but I already had 7 other guns in 38/357.

The next revolver? Either a Smith K22/model 17 for good performance and cheap ammo or a Blackhawk with 7.5" barrel in 45 Colt. The Blackhawk will give you a reason, if you need one, to start reloading. :D My Blackhawk 45 really came to life when I found THE load it liked.
