So I have wanted to do it for years I finally pulled the trigger on a SLR Rifleworks AR10 builders kit. Lower, Upper, 16" Handguard all in Black Multicam.

My plan is to build the upper out in .308 to start and most likely eventually build out a 6.5 Creedmoor upper. The only things I know about the build right now are the Parts above and it will eventually get a dedicated Nomad L.

I have never built an AR10 so I was looking for some direction on companies you all like or parts you all like for them. I know my use will be target shooting and eventually some Deer hunting as my kid gets older. The only part I expect to pay over 1k for is glass to put someone of a budget in perspective but I do want to be a high quality rifle and through a job change I have some disposable income to play with (Not taking vacation yet this year paid off :) )

Anyways would love to hear your thoughts.

Currently Considering a Magpul PRS GEN 3 as the stock. That's as far as I have gotten hah. My other big consideration right now is barrel length I have been bouncing between 18" and 20"

After a lot of trial and error with other mfgs, I stick to Aero Precision for all my parts kits. I also use their enhanced buffer tubes which have a notch to make seating and tightening the buffer tube super easy. They are a bit more expensive but really worth it in my opinion. They make good charging handles too. I would definitely recommend an extended latch one for the AR-10.
I use pretty generic bolts and carriers, but other with more experience can chime in if they like specially coated ones or whatever and if they recommend particular firing pins.
If you are going with the PRS Gen 3, then I definitely recommend the 20" barrel, even with plans to use a can. If you plan to carry the gun in the field much you might want to consider the PRS Lite and an 18" barrel.

I would go 20" for sure, since weight does not seem to be a consideration for this build. 20" will give you more velocity, for a bench gun type setup.

What would your go to barrel companies be, I was looking at criterion but have not started it in full as my receivers are probably 6-8 weeks out

If you're planning on taking this deer hunting, I hope you have a stand picked out. If PRS stocks on an AR10 with a can are being considered... this isn't going to exactly be a handy spot and stalk rifle. My AR10 (20" Hbar, A2 stock, 4-20x glass) is going to be close to 15lbs with a loaded mag and can.

If you're going heavy, might as well go heavy with a 20" Hbar.

I'm considering a LW profile 16-18" upper to add some flexibility.

As I go through this, it will probably end up being a range gun only. I'm probably a few years from ever taking it deer hunting and that is if my son wants to get into it so I'll probably do something else for that. I ended up grabbing a keymo break so I can suppress it immediately upon completion, I can never find them when I need them hah. I have been looking at Faxxon and Criterion for barrels so far.

I just finished my AR308 build. DPMS upper, 80% lower I finished myself, Aero BCG, Aero SS 18" barrel, PRI carbon float tube, VG6 Gamma brake, MOE+ grip, Aero enhanced buffer kit, Magpul STR stock, stock charging handle and trigger group. Topped off with a Vortex PST Gen II 3-15x FFP scope sitting in an Aero mount. I have not been able to get to the range yet, but I want to upgrade the trigger to a LaRue and swap out the charging handle to a big latch.

I like the Magpul PRS, but this days, I’m more likely to go with the Luth AR stock to save weight. My Falkor Omega with a 22” heavy barrel is right at 17 lbs with a Vortex Razor 4.5-27 on top of it and a loaded mag. It’s a heavy beast and never leaves the safe other than range trips.

I bought a POF Rogue in 308 late last year and it’s only 9.5 lbs loaded with a Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6 on top of it. It makes pretty frequent hunting trips.

A Magpul PRS3 will want for a longer barrel with rifle length gas out front. Way too much weight in the rear to balance properly if you stick a PRS3 on the tail and a shorter barrel out front.

I wouldn’t bother building the 308win - you already have a succession plan for it, so it will be wasted money.

Bartlein/Craddock or Proof research are the barrels I would recommend.

I’m also not terribly certain I’d recommend trying to buy or build an LFAR with a cap at $1,000. Kinda like going to a restaurant and ordering their best bottle of wine for under $50…

My budget is not $1,000 I was just saying a scope is the only single piece I expect to be over that $1,000 mark. I'm already into it over 1K with my Receivers, handguard, and Break. I will check out those barrels, thanks!!

I built an AR-10 for a friend of mine... he wanted something to poke piggies with. He handed me an Aero receiver set and a 16" Ballistic Advantage mid-length barrel and told me to build him something.... so I did.

Obviously, I put in an AP BCG, and some Magpul furniture. The forearm is an AP M5 slim. Note... this was a standard upper, not an Enhanced. After talking with a friend of mine who built an Enhanced, I decided not to go that way because I couldn't use a standard lapping tool to lap the receiver. As it turned out, the receiver trued up very well, and I didn't see a need for any bedding compound. Cheapo Redfield scope... so he could at least just go out and shoot it, but the scope actually works pretty well for what I intended. Hexmag mags... because Magpuls were not available at that time; they seem to work well enough, too.

I really like the barrel, it's a pretty heavy rifle as it is, the shorter barrel makes it a bit more compact and balanced. The KAK brake I put on it is quite effective (it's just like the brake on my Socom16... that's why I chose it...) if not a little loud.

The only thing I would change on this build would be to add an adjustable gas block... it's seriously overgassed.

Pieces parts...

Lapped receiver extension...

So I have made some decisions, some thought out some not so much. Will definitely be doing the SLR gas block I love the one on my .300blk:

The last big purchase will be my scope. I'm using the Primary Arms PLx as my baseline. Its 1500 and has the features I think I need. Going to do a lot more research before I pull the trigger on an optic though.

I have ordered everything but the gas system which I know what I want. This is definitely gonna be a bench rifle as it won't be light hah. I probably could have picked some better parts in the same price range but I think I'm gonna love it. Still need to pick an optic and eventually order my bipod. But considering I'm still probbaly 4-6 weeks on my receivers. Here is what i'm getting, it is by far the highest end rifle I have put together and my first AR10:

Bringing this back from the dead. I finally got the shipping info for my SLR receivers and Handguard. I should have this thing together in the next couple of weeks minus my optic. The Tract Toric that I chose won't ship until august. So were either go throw a strike eagle on it or go Irons for functional checks. Nothing in my previous parts list has changed. Thanks for all the input!!

Good looking rifle !

You'll like it, the only comment I have , is the Wilson barrel might have a tight chamber , ie cut on the minimum size chamber.

So don't be surprised if it fussy for a few hundred rounds.

Here is the totally finished minus the Sandman that follows it around. I do need to weigh it at some point.

Edit: Guess the charging handle and bcg are not there either. It doesn't fit in my bag so I have to take it apart hah. Its gonna get its own pelican at some point.

Bill Wilson has stated they went to Min + 0.002" HS, due to the tight chamber they had before.

Yeah I never had any issues with it. Once I opened up the port enough to cycle it hasn't had an issue yet. Probably have 150 rounds through it. Getting the gas block on took some elbow grease with the tight tolerance of both SLR and Wilson.
