By The Associated Press
OLYMPIA — Some state lawmakers are questioning Seattle's plans for stricter gun controls, and they want to know if Attorney General Rob McKenna believes the restrictions would be legal.

Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels recently announced plans to ban guns on city property, after two bystanders were wounded by gunfire at the Folklife Festival at Seattle Center in May.

But a new U.S. Supreme Court ruling says Americans have a right to own guns for self-defense and hunting.

Rep. Kevin Van de Wege of Sequim is one of six Democrats who requested the attorney general's legal opinion. He says it's important to know whether the Seattle plan would be pre-empted by state or federal law.

An attorney general's opinion gives state officials detailed legal analysis, but isn't legally binding.

Notice that six Democrats are asking for this. Don't mean to turn this into a political thread, but it shows the importance of working both sides of the aisle on these issues.

Unless

the 6 Democrats are trying to find out how far they can legally go in banning guns... and since this is Seattle, my guess is they are looking at it this way.

Sequim is not Seattle by a long shot. It's a beautiful old logging/fishing/farming community now becoming a retirement haven.

Not likely for these six - Sequim (and several other seats held by Democrats) are swing areas. Also, the State AG is a Republican, so it's unlikely they'd be asking him if their goal was to affirm the legality of Seattle's upcoming ban.

Well I read on the internet (yeah I know not the best place for info) that Sequim tried their own ban (in some form) on city property. It could be that they want Seattle to be the test case.

On a happy note, I participated in a 'phone conference with Rep. Jaime Herrera, 18th legislative dist. last night. This young NRA life member was happy about Heller and stated that Mayor Nickel was "way outta line" in his executive order banning guns on City property.

Rep Ross is a D, and was helping out with the WA State DOL regarding background checks and allowing Alien Firearms Licenses... some of the elected "D" officials "get it".
