I need help with a piece I've recently acquired. It is a Stevens 311 SxS 410 with a circle code of July 1963. I have removed the forearm but am unable to separate the barrel from the receiver. Could someone walk me through this step. The piece is in excellent condition and I don't want to screw it up. Thanks in advance for any help!

With the forearm off, I think you just open the action, lower the barrels, and lift the barrels off hinge pin and the receiver portion.
Note, if you pull the triggers with the gun apart, I do not know how difficult the 311 is to put back together. Some guns it's tough without risking messing something up.

Ditto!

I removed a small screw located on the front of the receiver but to no avail; the barrel will not budge. I'm sure that it has been many years since the barrel was removed but the action of the pivot is very smooth. What could be preventing it from separating?

You must remove the forearm first. If it is not off, the barrels cannot pivot forward enough to release.

Is the forearm still attached?

Forearm has been removed. Is there a site that might post a manual for a 311 since the maker fears a lawsuit if they do so?

Will the action not open at all?
with the forearm removed, push the release lever (on the tang, in front of the safety) all the way to the right and the action should open. Then tilt the barrells all the way down and lift them up off the hinge pin.

Will the gun open up with the forearm on?

I haven't seen a side by side yet that wouldn't come apart using the procedure already posted here several times.

Did you remove the entire fore end, including the fore end metal parts, or just unscrew the single screw that attaches the wood to the hanger?

That is strange. With the forend off and the action open, there's literally nothing I can think of that would keep the barrels from coming off.

I have attempted to pry the retainer loose using moderate pressure without success. Is this retainer forced off? See attached photo with screwdriver pointing to retainer. DSC_0082.jpg

just make sure the action is closed when you try to take the forearm off.
But yes, you left the metal hanger piece on the gun. It needs to come off for the barrels to be removed.

Okay, excuse to work on my camera skills. Put the wood back on so it looks like this....

Then take hold of the front of the forend, like this...

Then pull straight down on the front and this will happen....

Then open the action so it looks like this...

Then the barrels should lift right off like this...

No comments on how ugly the model is, he was born that way.

Thank you all for your help! The photos did the trick for me and I sure do appreciate the trouble you went to in answering my question.

Glad you got it worked out!!
My first double was a 311 410, graduated to a Stevens 5100 (same thing) in 20 ga later. Have a 16 ga 5100.
Always loking for a 12 ga. I just shoot these things better.
