Have a couple questions for you guys about the Stevens / Savage 311 double barrel shotguns:

#1 Whats the difference between the 311A/B/C/D/E and series F and H and whatever other ones I have missed. I see stripped frames available over at Numrich, they are the 311D Series H 12ga.

#2 Are parts commonly available for these guns If I buy a striped frame? How about barrels, do these have 3 inch chambers?

#3 Any one know how difficult these would be to put together form a pile of parts?

I want to assemble one form scratch since I want to use new wolf springs for the internals, as well as want all internal parts as well as the barrel and frame with an NP3 coating. Also to really anger you guys I’m planning on on registering it as an SBS and cutting the barrels down to about 8 inches.

I saw these frames and am temped to pick one up and get it registered as an SBS and begin to acquire parts in my spare time. However I know spare barrels for certain shotguns can be hard to find on the used market and don’t want to be stuck with a useless SBS registered receiver.

Thanks for your help guys. Dan

I have a no serial number 311D 12 guage. 2 3/4" only. I believe doubles have to be fitted barrel to frame, not sure about what that would entail cash-wise, or time-wise if you have the technology. If you are thinking Robar for the NP3, last time I had something down there they didn't do double barrels (barrels at least), SxS or O/U. And the diamondkote guy said he wouldn't touch mine "do to the age of the gun". But it's a great stand in the corner yard gun. I think 8" barrels just might be shorter than the forend.
