One of these days I am going t get this old Brno completed and quit bothering all of you fine people, but, until then...

I'm ready to start the finishing part of the project. I have pretty much narrowed it down to the Minwax Antique Oil Finish, no stain, just the MAOF over smooth natural wood and let the colors show as they will. Question is, is the finish applied to the entire stock at one time, or one side at a time? If the entire stock is to be worked on prior to letting it dry, I'm concerned of mucking up one side while rubbing on the other. All help is appreciated.

Get yourself a plant hanger. Take an old metal hangar and insert one end into the floor-plate. allow the hanger to fall along the barrel channel and toward the end cap. make a hook on the end just above the end cap, and hang it from the plant hangar. (Should look a little like an "S" shape.)

Apply the finish with it hanging, and make sure it does not bump into the plant hangar or your body when doing so.

Its what we did in gunsmithing school, and worked well! Some of us even cut the bottom of the plant hangar off so we could attach it to our vises, that way we could turn the vise and get at other parts of the stock....

What I did with my "T" Bolt .22 was take a piece of wooden dowl slightly smaller than the barrel channel. Drill 2 holes (in the dowl) and run a couple short drywall screws thru the dowl into the barrel channel in effect making a wooden barrel. You can then hold on to the dowl as you apply finish to the front end of the stock. You can clamp the dowl in a vice etc for drying.
