Don't presently own a 40. Strongly thinking I need one. Most of what I've looked at I really don't want, or don't want to pay their price. But, I'm looking (almost seriously) at a Cougar. I know the Beretta subsideary Stoeger makes the Cougar, and the price I've seen is about $350. Price looks really good. Now for my $64 question: Have any of you had your hands on one and also fired it? Tell me all about your experience and opinions.

I won one on an auction a couple weeks ago. My friend saw the auction and really liked it so I let him take it (he paid). He hasn't picked it up at the store yet (3 weeks) but he's supposed to over the weekend and we'll both shoot it at the range. EVERYTHING I have read about the gun says it should be a great shooter, very smooth. I hear they are no different from the Beretta marked guns.

After looking at a lot of 40s I bought an 8040 a few days ago. Mainly I wanted to check out the rotating barrel lockup.
I must say, even as a multi Sig owner, I am impressed. A solid piece of work about the same size and weight as my 228. Accurate. Very easy to take down. Trigger smooth with long first pull.
I do not like;
The trigger sits a long way forward in the DA position compared with the Sig but I will probably get used to it.
The decocker/safety is a bit of a joke. It looks as though it came off a toy gun. On the other hand I do not use the safety position only the decocker.
The take-down mechanism push button makes an awkward projection on the right side of the frame.

Own the 8000 9mm, GREAT GUN!!... Flawless, accurate shoot... great value for UNDER $400!
Have shot the .40... Very low/managable recoil and very accurate!!
If you like the feel of an all-metal, full-sized service pistol... you found it... and for under $400, a no-brainer!

I've only shot a 9mm variant of it, but I can tell you this: It recoils a little differently, and to me a little lighter than most pistols. Also, it is a fully metal pistol. Um, and price point: $350 is a steal for this weapon. It's the same quality level as anything made in Maryland, or Valtrompia, at a fraction of the price.
Also, don't mean to brag, but I didn't notice an appreciable difference in slow fire between it and a Ruger P95 I had with me. I was hitting the head a 15 meters shot after shot. Where the difference really showed was quick fire. When I fired it fast, the Stoeger didn't really rise up that much, whereas the Ruger does. My group opened up with both pistols, but it stayed tighter with the Cougar. I've heard it's a consequence of the rotating bolt.

I have one too, its my first handgun larger than a 22LR. So far after 100 rounds or so, I really like the gun. Based on my limited knowledge, breakdown is very easy, easy to clean, I like the 15 round capacity, (I know the .40 holds 10). I personally don't think the recoil is bad at all. I plan on buying the .40 soon too.
