I recently started a thread requesting info about the Stoeger M3000 and one poster suggested the Mossberg 930. After watching a few YouTube videos, I'm wondering if the Mossberg might be better. So, am starting a new thread with focus on comparing the two. The main use will be turkeys and a shotgun back-up for coyote calling. Another factor is recoil. The Mossberg has a softer recoil. I've had shoulder surgery with complete recovery and have been shooting a lot since my recovery with no issues. But, I don't want to be foolish. Your thoughts out there are always helpful and appreciated. Tom

The Mossberg is gas operated and has less felt recoil than the Stoeger which is recoil operated. The main complaint about the Stoeger is that it is less reliable with lower powered shells like 1 ounce, 2 3/4 dram. If you are going to be shooting trap or skeet the Mossberg would be better.

I've got an M3K, but don't have the 930. Friend had one and had issue shooting 3Gun with it, so he now has a M3K. Another one of the guys I shoot 3Gun with has a 930 and hasn't had an issue. But the vast majority of guns I see at matches are inertia.

I do have an 11-87 Rem gas gun, so if you ever head my way, you can try both with similar loads and get an idea. I agree that the gas gun has lighter recoil, which plays a big role in a target gun, but for hunting......maybe if you're heading to Argentina for doves with a few cases of shells. For hunting and 3Gun I've switched over to inertia (Benellis and Stoeger), just simpler to maintain/clean.

Chuck...You''ve always been generous in your offers to help out with my many shooting dilemmas...they are never ending, eh? Just to let you know, I really appreciate it and will happily reciprocate if the need arises. BTW, are you a member of the Mill Creek Rifle Club outside of Desoto?

I was till I moved to the sticks (east of you) and built my range. I still shoot 3Gun matches there. It's about 45 minutes from me, just couldn't justify the commute VS "out the back door". Just let me know if I can help out, we probably aught to look at a joint coyote hunt once deer seasons over!

I have 2 930's- a JM PRO I used for 3 gun and another I use for ducks/dove and turkey. I am happy with both. I have a friend who uses a 3000 highly modified for 3 gun, and another who uses a 3000 for ducks and turkey. They are both happy with their guns as well.

I've had both. I'd buy another Stoeger, not another Mossberg. Especially for your uses. The Mossberg has the option for more toys that can be added to turn it into a tactical or self defense gun. But as a hunting gun I like the inertia action much better. They may not handle some of the very lightest loads. The ones almost no one shoots. But with typical loads you get the reliability of a pump without having to pump it. IME the Stoeger was more reliable with the loads I actually shot.

Yes an inertia gun kicks harder than a gas gun. But a big part of that is that normally gas guns are a lot heavier. The weights on these 2 are pretty much the same depending on which model you choose. Inertia guns don't kick any harder than a pump or double. People rarely complain about excessive recoil with those.

I ran across a smoking deal on a used Benelli M-1 a few years ago. I shot it side by side with the Stoeger for about a year and decided I didn't need both. The Stoeger is basically a copy of the Benelli. I had no complaints about the Stoeger, but let it go in favor of the Benelli.

If I were in the market for a new shotgun today I'd seriously consider this. You get the light weight of an inertia gun with a gas system.

I don’t have a bad thing to say about either brand, but I would go with the 930. I’ve had nothing but great experiences with every Mossberg that I’ve owned.

Mossberg has excellent customer support in my experience over a couple uses. (Never used thier customer support for a shotgun btw. Only rifles)

No idea on stoeger. Nothing bad to say
