Hello,

I just purchased a new Stoeger 20 gauge O/U for $349 from Gander Mtn as a birthday present for my little brother. He is turning 14 and this will be his first gun. I am planning to take him skeet shooting on Sunday and was wondering what I should do to prep the gun?

I am completely new to shotguns (save for a 4 hour skeet and trap lesson I took a couple years ago... and this didn't go over the guns at all beyond shooting mechanics). I don't know what type of choke if any I should get for this, etc.

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks,

Chase

Clean it, for one

As far as chokes, the barrels will probably be choked already you just need to determine what kind of choke. Remove the fore-end and look at the barrels, it should say how they are choked if they are

You can also look at the end of the barrels (MAKE SURE YOUR GUN IS UNLOADED) and see if they are threaded inside to verify they will take aftermarket chokes.

My dad has a Stoeger O/U and his firing pin plunger broke and he's having a terrible time finding parts for it, for what it's worth...

The stoeger autos of recent manufacture I think use Beretta mobile chokes I dont know for sure on O/Us, I would get Improved Cylinder for top barrel and Skeet for bottom barrel and thats all make him pattern both barrels.

If it is new and has removable choke tubes, what did it come with? Skeet constriction (.005), is all that is necessary as targets are only 21 yards away. You don't want or need anything tighter than IC (.010). Also, you will appreciate shooting light loads and not the 1-1/8 oz promo loads

Good luck and have fun

Agreed. Walmart has Winchester Super Targets for $5.97 a box which is just slightly higher than the bulk Federal/Remington but they offer 7/8oz/1oz loads
