Been frustrated about this for awhile, and want to settle on a solution.

We have an extended cab F-150, and I'd like to be able to carry hunting rifles / shotguns, and a Marlin 30-30 from time to time.

I've seen the over-the-seat fabric-type rifle holders, but I'm looking for something unobtrusive, which will be less likely to attract a thief.

Three options I'm considering:

1. Under the back seat: won't work, as I have a safe installed back there, easily accessible for a handgun.
2. Behind the back seat: the rear seat back appears to be screwed or bolted into place ... I wonder if it could be made to fold down easily, and if there is storage room behind it?
3. Above our heads, in a rack mounted to the roof: as used by LEO's, more obvious, but much more readily accessible. Could be made very secure ... has anyone done this, and where would I turn for purchase / installation? [Perhaps something like Big Sky Racks ... www.bigskyracks.com ?]

Thanks ... regards from TN.

I always thought these looked like a good way to go.

Cab carry

Beware carring in cab if vehicles. Twra has a rule/law that will net you a fine Also possiblly confiscation of your long gun.
Thp has started enforceing or rather calling twra to cite you if you argue about it. Happend to a recently retired officer. pistols okay they say. So
I guess it's a ak pistol with a drum mag & laser site sitting on dash.
Or ar varient.
If you happen to put one in cab might be a good idea to have it in a hidden pocket behind seat below window . or a overhead mount that sets it up where it can not be seen.
I usually have my m4 in trunk anyways.

Zero Chances ... there isn't enough room under the front seats for the safe. Would be inaccessible, or couldn't bolt down.

ReadyontheRight ... neat idea, but apparently not available for my vehicle (2001) ... I think the overhead "console" would interfere (sunglass holder, compass/thermometer, etc.)

bpsig ... are you saying the TN Wildlife Resources Agency won't let you carry a loaded rifle in the cab of your pickup? Where are you supposed to carry a hunting rifle? Does a TN carry permit help? One goofy law after another ... :banghead:

Most jurisdictions I know of will let you carry an UNLOADED long arm in the cab of your truck, but a LOADED rifle or shotgun is verboten! :cuss:

I Have a 94 f150 thats a lifted off road rig that I drive daily. I have a gun rack but I only use it when I know I wont be parked with the gun in the rack. Behind the seat is good for me when I dont want them visible, but I have a regular cab. I think under the seat is your best bet.

Well, if you really want to go whole hog and do NOT have the F150 that has a rear bench seat that folds FORWARD (possibly only happened in the model year 1998), you could do this:

I looked into this. If it fit my truck (of course I have the one model year that it won't fit), I would totally have this in my F150...

Oh, interesting. Looks like they dropped their line of lockers that fit under the rear seat, and have gone 100% with ones that suck up space in the bed.

I would not have thought that to be a winning move, but...hey. It's not my business.

Oh, and behind the rear seat back is an option. Depending on how your seat is set up, you might have to cut through a metal bracket (on the seat back) or two, but there is room. I have a 1,000 watt amp back there.

PS You might want to be concerned about humidity, though. The rear (outflow) air vents are back there, and there was some mild oxidation/corrosion on the metal parts of the seatback right in front of them. PM me if you want guidance on how to take the seatback off.

I had a rifle rack bolted to the rear of the cab behind the rear seat in my chevy x-cab, I couldn't fold the seat up because of how the rack was mounted, but I could haul two rifles and nobodied ever know they were back there.
