I was curious if there are any disadvantages or problems with storing a rifle in a vehicle. I currently reside in Texas and have been keeping a SKS loaded with 9 rounds in my truck for disaster readiness. (No round in chamber).

Can this harm the rifle in any way? Temperature swings? What say you?

I wouldn't worry about the SKS. It'll do fine in your truck. I wouldn't worry about the temperature(you've fired it, right? Much hotter than your truck) as much as I would the humidity. I've seen living things growing on peoples floor boards before. Theft would be my top concern.

Go to Wal-Mart, buy one of the Remington silicone impregnated gun socks for about $5, buy a quart of Mobil 1 or other synthetic motor oil in the auto department (much cheaper than gun oil), apply generously to the already rough exterior of your SKS, and you'll be good to go. I live in the high humidity and high temp area of the Texas Gulf Coast. I take the gun (and my Marlin 60 and Rem 870) out every six months or so to re-oil, and I've yet to find any rust.

I live outside Ft Worth, TX and I've had a Mini 14 in my vehicle nearly all the time for close to 20 years and it's still running smooth.

Looks like hell since it's been bashed around, but it works.

My grandpa has kept his rifle behind the seat in his truck (to shoot mountain lions, cyotes, and wolves) for years and it is still in great shape.
