I'm looking for a weapons light for my XD. Sportsmans Guide has a Streamlight knockoff called Guide Gear Rail Mounted Tactical for 39.97. If it's decent I will consider it, but if it's a waste of money I can get 2 cases of beer for the same price. I don't mind not having the absolute best, but I hate wasting money.

Anyone have any experiance with these?

i love quality gear so i would go with somethig different, but a am a member at sportsmans guide, they are a great company with f=great service to the buyer. i bet if you get it and it ain't o snuff with what you wanted then you could send it back, then at most all you would loose is shipping.

one question what is the use of the light on the weapon gonna serve? is it gonna be a nightstand gun or a gun that you plan to carry? if you were gonna carry it, then i would say get one of the models that are gonna be easier to get a holster for it, like the surfire lights, streamlights, insight etc. but for a night stand gun than that isn't an issue.

what are the lumens that it puts out does the web site say anything about the lights specs?

It will be a nightstand gun. I might even put it on my Shotgun.
It says it has 65 lumens. I think the Streamlight has 80 lumens. Is that a big difference?

65 lumens will be fine, that is normally the inustry minimum standard for a weapon light or a hand held light used for defensive purposes. and it is for the night stand heck, go for it and let us know how it works out for you, you might hae found a good piece of kit that none of us were tracking!

Don't go by price alone. If it were only about price, we'd all be shooting Hi Points  See if you can play w/ one & compare the light quality and switch quality....Be leary of the knock off! ;)

Yes that's the one - I might take a chance on this. I hope it won't break on my shotgun though.

I wouldn't skimp on a shotgun light. I went through two lights for my 870 before I wised up a little. BTW, my buddy got three of those lights for his gun shop and one of them didn't even last long enough to make it out the door. Others might have had better luck, but I would suggest a different light.

I've got an Ombu Tactical Z5 Ledwave light on my XD9. It's a cheaper lamp that is also a direct rail mount, originally it was LED.. (Don't laugh, it was a door prize somewhere). It wasn't bright enough so I experimented and now it has had the lamp assembly changed over to a SureFire module, I think it was a P61 (120 lumens). Runs on two CR123A photolithium batteries. Bright enough to light up my neighbor's garage from across the street on a dark night.

Lovesbeer99,
If you want to use a removable light I would suggest a Streamlight M3X. If you want a permanent solution I would go with the SureFire 618FA. From my experience those two will hold up to the abuse. Other than that, anything with a solid body and an LED bulb should hold up to the abuse. Botach had a sale on Streamlight's newest mil-spec led tactical lights a week ago for $89. I would venture to say that these will work, though I have not had any experience with them on a shotgun.

To me it is worth spending a little extra money to get what I pay for. Streamlight has been around for years and has proven to be a great light. The TLR-1 is a great light with approx. 80 lumens from a LED bulb. Insight Technology also makes a good light. They are the manufacturer of the original M3 light Streamlight sold. From a Police Officer perspective we wouldn't want to skimp on this subject. As a home owner with a weapon on the night stand you also want to make sure your light works when you hear that noise in the middle of the night.

Thanks to all, I really do appreciate all the replies. I do believe as most people that you don't want to skimp, but that's what I was asking for. Just beacuse it's less expensive does not mean it's not good enough for a night stand light.

For example, my buddy bought a Leupold MK4 for tactical purposes. He needs that level of quality and durability. I bought a 100 scope for my rifle that I only use on nice sunny days at the range off a bench. It's not the best and I guess people would argue that I'm skimping but I'm not. It was right for what I needed.

This is not one of those cases though, so I'll buy the Steamlight. I just thought I'd elaborate.

Evan, how does the Z-5 lamp housing disassemble so you can replace the lamp assembly? I have a couple of the Z-5 and can't figure out how to do it. I'd like to replace those lamps with the SureFire P60L.
