strictly for the meat?

I would like to see DNR adopt a policy such that if you want an antlered deer you first have to fill three doe tags.

I am pretty sure Wisconsin has a policy where you have to fill 1 doe tag first.

I am in Minnesota and the DNR here just started an "early antlerless" season. It's next weekend.

Regular season for me is the Nov 3 - Nov 11. I think the early antlerless is a great way to decrease doe populations. It gives me a chance to get out while it's warm. I can see if my stand is in a good spot or not. I can get my doe for meat and then move my stand and try and get a trophy buck during the regular season without worrying about not having anything if I do hold out for a buck.

I think having people fill X number of doe tags before filling an antler tag is a good way to increase the number of bucks. I wouldn't mind that either and it might decrease the number of spike bucks that get harvested.

I think the early antlerless is a good way to decrease the # of deer.

Early in my hunting career i killed three fantastic deer. Two score close to 200 and one scored 202. Am well aware that there is little chance that i will ever get a whitetail like that again, so i just hunt for fun and for the meat. If a big buck happens by i might shoot him if he is really close to the truck. On the other hand, i might be looking for some doe meat to make some chili.

I fully believe there is room for all God's creatures,...right next to the potatoes and gravy.

One of the things I dearly love about TN is the very liberal doe limits. In my area, it's three does per day. That's meat for me and all the family households.

I only wish they'd raise fall turkey limits, from one bird, either sex.

Yum!

I'm an Alabama meat hunter. I hunt with three other guys on about 700 acres in an area with high doe density, and I'm the only one who eats venison instead of beef. I try to keep the population in check by shooting does. To echo ChefJeff, it's organic, free range, low fat, and I process it my self so it isn't full of intestinal bacteria and the other horrors of the factory farm system. My buddies hold out for a buck and pay somebody to mix it 50-50 with fatty pork and make sausage. It tastes great off the grill, but I can hear my arteries screaming. I have to have a couple of cold ones just to ease my conscience. Now last year I was about to pull the trigger on a doe when a 12 point tried to stick his nose up her posterior, so I did the gentlemanly thing and ended the harrasment. And, yes, we ate him too. But I did make a European mount-- you can't put the meat on the wall, it keeps spoiling.

My primary motivation for hunting is the meat. If I have the chance to harvest a 4-point or a 12-point, I think you know which I would take. :D But, I would not pass-up a 4-point in the morning, for a 12-point in the afternoon. A buck in-hand is worth 2 in the woods.

I mostly shoot rabbit and wood pigeon. If I didn't enjoy hunting, I'd buy it from a game butcher. That would work out cheaper than paying for a rifle, decent boots etc even if I ate it weekly. I get a lot of satisfaction from a humane kill and from using skill to feed myself.

That said I'm not keen on hunting things just for the thrill of the hunt. If it's not for food or pest control, I'm not interested.

i hunt strictly because i enjoy it but yes i like to be able to eat what i shoot.
no i wont ussually pass more than 2 critters hopeing for a trophy.

Like many on this thread, I am strictly a meat hunter. That's the reason I don't Duck hunt anymore. I realised that I really didn't like the oilyness of the meat.

I won't pass up a doe to wait for a buck, I'm out there for the meat. But what really gets me out there every year? The fact that I like hunting, and being outside when I can.

JWarren:

Sound 'bout right. That's why as-soon-as I get out of this office at 11:30, I'm going home, packing the shotgun, Chocolate lab and calling my daughter to get her shotgun. Time to hunt pheasants! Pheasant...it's what's for supper, today!

I have killed enough game (deer) to eat over the last many years. I am looking for a VERY NICE trophy sized rack. If I find one, then I'll have meat to boot. But, I don't need to hunt to feed myself and I am the only one in my family who really appreciates venison, so I will be picky...picky...picky this year.

Meat, but...

Meat... But let's say there are 3 deer in front of me, one with a decent set of antlers and a couple doe's... I'd shoot the buck first then try for at least one other (we can take up to 3 in Ar in alot of areas) to top off the freezer. Antlers are OK, but I primarily want the meat.

My only real interest in hunting is for meat/purposes of self-sufficiency. I'm not into the trophy thing at all...

I am pretty sure Wisconsin has a policy where you have to fill 1 doe tag first.

..........in many management units, but not all. But the availability of bonus antlerless tags abounds thoughout the state. The problem lies with getting access to where the deer are. That's the main reasoning behind the "earn-a-buck". To force hunters on large tracts of private land to thin the herd if they want the opportunity to shoot bucks.

Here in western NY any deer is a good deer - they are not overpopulated and cagey.
I hunt for the meat but boy would I like to get a trophy rack.
We have 3 seasons - Bow, shotgun (or rilfel in some areas) then late bow/muzzle loader.
Just came home empty this opening weekend of bow - didnt let anything pass and spent 24 hours in a tree, the weather sucked.
Anyway - 1st thing by my stand is going in the freezer - then I may get a bit picky for a while looking for a rack.
If the deer aren't moving much then it doesnt matter about the rack - its all about 2 deer for the freezer.
Out here - we apply for a doe tag and then its a lottery to see if you get it.
The good thing is if you apply for bow/shutgun/muzzleloader you automatically get a does tag and either sex tag.
Yes I hunt for meat and to get away from it all - I love the solitude and the change to get the drop on old mr whitetail.

I am a meat hunter but certainly will NOT pass a nice rack - cant eat the horns but the rest of him sure tastes good!

I hunt mainly for meat but try to use everything I can (hide, antlers, ect) but I also hunt just cuz I enjoy being outdoors.

I hunt for two reasons.

first and foremost, I hunt for food and clothing. we eat the meat and wear or sleep under the skins. hell, the only part of the deer I have yet to find a use for is the vertebra and empty skull(the brain matter is used to tan the hide)

second and just as important, I hunt to do my part in keeping the rampant deer population in check. This means I take all the does that I, my family, and my friends can eat. I leave the big bucks for the phallicly challenged so they can shoot them from 9000 yards away with anti-tank rifles and then brag about how bad they are. oh wait, that's just my a-hole of a neighbor.

I don't shoot it if I'm not going to eat it

same

also i wont shoot deer cause they look to much like my golden retriever. i wont shoot bear cause theres no way in hell im dragging one out of the woods. that basicly leaves upland game birds and turkey. those i WILL hunt and eat.

never have seen a good set of horns that didn't have a good stack of meat under 'em.

about 85% of our meat diet is made up of wild game. so we eat what i kill, but i'm looking for good racks while doing so.

Why I Hunt....

I hunt mostly deer and squirrels these days, 'cause I love being in the woods in the fall. The first deer I get each fall goes to Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry, altho I keep the heart and fry as steaks. Any additional deer I get are shared between myself and friends who like wild game.

I'll take a nice buck if I get the chance, but won't pass on does when carrying my bow. With muzzleloader and rifle I usually hold out for a nice buck early in the season, and take a doe late in season.
