Reloading is fun and being able to tailor a load for a specific purpose is really cool and practical.
Here's the story:
My son's girlfriend is new to shooting sports and I've been trying to get her and my son to come out to the local range for years! I wanted her to have a great experience so I loaded up some "Mouse Fart" loads. 3.5 grains of Trail Boss under a 125 gr RMR plated hollow point in Starline .357 cases and brought my GP100 for her to use. Nice big heavy gun, low power rounds, she had a great time and kept wanting to shoot more.
For comparison I brought some medium strength magnum loads, 7.0 gr of BE-86 under a 158 gr SWC. I shot these for comparison as a demonstration, she'll try them next time. Yes Martha there is a difference. The Trail Boss loads were like shooting a .22 Long Rifle in a smaller gun. Excellent low power loads for a first timer.
I also brought a 9mm SP-01 and some lighter loads. Well after shooting the GP100 she just had to try the 9. By the end of the day she was filling magazines, racking the slide, working the safety and practicing reloads.
BTW we did a lot of safety instruction, basic grip for revolver and semi-auto, 4 rules, range etiquette etc.
Starting with the light loads was a winner for her and me.
