I'm looking to buy another 44 magnum, I now shoot a ruger hunter 7.5 barrel but I would like to own a super blackhawk with a 10.5 bull barrel.

I mainly shoot 180 gr xtp over 32 gr H110.

Recoil is heavy but manageable will the 10.5 barrel tame the recoil because of the extra weight and will I see an increase in fps with the 10.5 over the 7.5 on the hunter.

Thanks for your help

You 'may' see a velocity increase but every revolver is a law unto itself. It is entirely possible that a good 7½" shoots faster than a 10" with a wide gap or rough bore. I don't know why anybody wants one that long but you'll gain more from the longer sight radius than any increase in velocity.

You trying to make it into a rifle???

If you're concerned about recoil, rest assured that the sheer heft of the 10.5" SBH does a superb job of absorbing the recoil of even the stoutest full-house loads.

The only (admitedly minor) drawback of the SBH's heft and 10.5" barrel is that it balances nose-heavy, and may be tiring to hold in a firing position for extended periods.

Super blackhawk 44-mag 10.5 barrel

tikit2ryde: My Son & I have had a 10.5 SBH for several years and I belive it shoots better than our other 7.5 SBH`s. We shoot mainly hard cast 240 gr gas checked SWC bullets, that we cast. The Gun is very accruate and a real pleasure shoot, it handles recoil of a stout load very well. We don`t shoot hot loads. Never had any kind of problem with this Gun or any of our RUGER S/A`s. If you can find one buy it, I think you will really enjoy it.
Good Luck To You:

Thanks for the input very helpful.

And yes I am trying to make a short barreled rifle.

I have the chance to buy a blued 10.5 but I think i will hold out for a stainless one.

Again thanks

before I switched over to a 41 mag I had 4 Ruger 44 mags. both barrel lengths of redhawks and both barrel lengths of sst Super Blackhawks. by far the best of the 4 was the 10.5 inch bull barrel Super Blackhawk in both accuracy and workmanship. either Super Blackhawk was by far better than the redhawks in all aspects

I've got my eyes open for a long barrel Super myself. They are more for long range silhouette shooting, rather than field use, although where there's a will there's a way...

Does your 180 XTP load emulate the Remington UMC 180 gr. load? That is a scorcher. I've clocked that one at 1650 fps out of a 5" barrel. Shock and Awe, as I like to call it. I don't think the recoil is that bad, honestly. Lots of bark, but not nearly the bite of the heavier bullet loads. I think out of a 10.5" bull barrel that should be quite nice to shoot.

tikit2ryde: Darn your hide: I did not know that Ruger made a 10.5 in Stainless Steel. Now you got me looking again. (( And it is all your fault. )) Seriously I hope you find a 10.5 you will really enjoy it I think. I am getting old and recoil is starting to bother me, but I still shoot our 10.5 and enjoy it. Good Luck To You:
