suppressed .22 options (red squirrel issues)

I have a single shot .22 with a 20" barrel. The CCI .22 Shorts make far less noise than a surpressed .22 I have makes with STD. Velocity loads. The sound of the bullet hitting a tree when you miss is louder than the report of the rifle.

They chrony about 640fps for me and will wallop a squirrel at 20 yards.

The use of a single-shot occurred to me also. Since you're likely not going to be using a round that will cycle a semiauto action anyway, the handiness (and closed chamber) of a single-shot makes sense.

If you don't mind toting the extra weight, a T/C Contender with a 12" or 14" barrel could make a fairly "suppressed" platform for a Colibri or .22 CB.

Ruger makes a very nice "Break barrel" air rifle. Pretty quiet and at 1100fps it goes in one side and out the other with proper shot placement.(1/8 inch in front of ear) Took me a while to figure the best spot. I had a real problem in our suburban area. They were invading the walls and in our area, responsible for at least one house fire. (knawed on electrical wiring causing a short/fire within the walls. They would claw and knaw into the soffet then nest in the walls. Commercial trapper that is county approved was charging 50 bucks per... Air rifle was 125 bucks. (came with scope) Took over 6 months to reduce the population, and they still show up at least once a week. If you want to get really good information on Adult air guns visit:

Good forum and good information on High end rifles that can do what you want.

I lived in Minnesota for a while, don't do ANYTHING illegal when hunting.
You can loose your guns, car, house, and freedom for a while.
The police are known to take DNR officers with them on arrest warrents since the DNR can go anywhere they want on just a suspicion.

Of course, all advice on this thread is assuming that all other legalities are being met...

I wouldnt recommend the aguilla SSS. I stepped outside to see how loud it was (im in town outskirts, so I risked upsetting the neighbors). Needless to say, i stepped inside pretty quickly. It cycled the action on my Model 60. The colibri is quieter than my last pellet gun, and is probably potent enough.

The greys didnt seem to be a problem this year, but there was a red squirrel that made me wish i brought my .22 with. At least i would have had SOME game to bring home

some fun information here guys, as for those who are worried about me breaking any laws, save the speaches and finger wagging. This has been a conversation in deer camp for years, just thought I'd start up a fun discussion about creative ways to handle the tree-rat problem that every hunter has come across where ever those little bastards roam. We have also joked about bringing a claymore and grenades into the woods for one of the guys who can't seem to hit anything...but don't keep an eye on the horizon for a mushroom cloud anytime soon. Thanks for those who took this for what its worth...I'm thinking a small pellet pistol might be fun, or just doing some squirrel hunting before and after deer season just to keep the skills sharp...

any other ideas?

Hate to tell ya, but that's kind of a specialty here when we think that someone is asking for advice on circumventing the law. Part of our mission here is obeying laws, even the stupid ones. So unless we understand completely what you're asking, you might receive some speeches and see some wagging fingers. In the end, it's for your own good as well as ours. Nothing personal.

That being said, glad you've gotten some good suggestions. I'm not personally into wacking the furry little critters, but to each their own, I suppose.

I have thought about the same sort of thing and have come up with about the same solution. Getting a really quiet air rifle seems to be the ticket. Probably a spring action rather than gas. I was not really thinking of pistols since I am not really a great shot with one any way. Maybe a decent way to sharpen those skills...

In defense of your friend......some squirrels are hard to stop.

It can sound like fun and games, till someone loses an eye...

An air pistol will be a very compact and relatively quiet weapon but would it have the range and accuracy and killing power to knock down a squirrel?

There a rifle called an AR-7 that is a take down .22lr rifle that can be dismantled and stored in its own butt stock.
It is some sort of survival rifle and it even floats when packed away in its stock.

The rifle length barrel will allow even a low power round like a CB caps round to develop enough energy to be reliably lethal against small animals yet it would be compact enough to fit in a backpack or strapped to the side of a backpack.
It would be accurate enough to hit them at decent ranges too.

Another option could be one of those double barrel rifles with a .22 calibre barrel on top and a larger calibre barrel below. Normally the lower barrel is a shotgun calibre but I have seen weapons with a lower barrel in a centrefire calibre like a .222 or a .243. I guess it depends on what sort of terrain you hunt on and what sort of calibre you want to shoot deer with.

BTW using Claymores would make too much noise. A decent flame thrower like an LPO-50 would make much more sense.

I'm thinking a small CO2 powered pellet pistol might be the trick, I have a soft-air pistol that pushes those 6mm bbs at around 400 fps and while that doesn't kill them, the one i shot in the a$$ on my 3 seasons porch last year hasn't been around much, maybe thats because he had his tail up when i fired. Maybe a swift shot to the pooper gave him a hint....something to pursue there as far as marksmanship practice?

From my understanding shooting through a series of tires connected together offers some sound suppression.

Also since it is not attached to the firearm in any way it is not considered a suppressor?

You could always,

Haul around some tires in an oversized wheel barrel and a make shift stand every where you go.
