Was watching the highly liberal Bill Maher "Real Time" show. The completely anti-gun Maher was speaking about a self defense law in Florida. And as is his habit, giving a highly biased, twisted, false portrayal of what the law was and what it meant. Then the surprising part.

Ben Affleck stopped him, mid-sentence, gave a fair description of what the law was about, said if you legally toted a gun it shouldn't be a problem. And that like it or not, since right to carry in Florida was brought back, violent crime against citizens had dramatically gone down. In the end, Maher could do little, but capitulate and change subjects. Affleck pointed out that it might seem cute and funny to castigate gun owners, but reality was perhaps that whether one wanted to carry or not, it made life better if some people did carry.

As much as I can't stand Ben Afflect as an actor, he does seem to be more pro-gun than most actors. Wasn't he and Jennifer Lopez applying for CCW permits in Georgia or something when they were the Media Darlings??

Good to see that at least a few movie personnel see things in a clear light.

This hype by Brady bunch over FL carry laws is more than a little puke making - talk about biased hype! :rolleyes:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sorry - forgot to include the obligatory ''rivers of blood'' mention!! :p
Yeah, actually Affleck mentioned the Brady Bill people. Maher claimed Florida itself was telling foreign tourists not to argue with locals for they might get shot. And Affleck corrected him saying it was Brady people saying that. And doing so was absolutely ridiculous.
Don't be surprised-it's no coincidence I'd bet as there's been reported talk of him running for Senator/Congressman here in Virginia over the last week or two (!?!) The Dems are desperate to counter George Allen's rising star, and they're trying to lure a big name to their cause to do so.
Coincidence that he's appearing on this show and he's speaking in a confrntational manner with it's host? You be the judge.
Methinks Mr. Affleck is learning a play or two from Hillary's playbook on the attempted wooing of conservative votes by speaking for some of thier traditional causes.
Don't believe it the hype anymore than you'd beleive Hillary.
Cruc (already pissed that Dem's think they can have some no-nothing hollywood star who has no ties or experience to Virginia to move here and run for office to get them blingbling pressplay), Cruc
It may be partly gearing up for political action now but he made some decently pro-gun comments several years ago on the O'Reilly Factor (it was however in support of Kerry not being a huge anti-gunner, which was a crock).
And if I'm not mistaken about it being him there was some talk of Affleck having a CCW and doing alot of skeet shooting or something in Georgia, anyone know about that?? Back when he was w/ J-Lo IIRC.
I'm not gonna be so quick to jump to conclusions about there being some sort of hidden agenda with his comments. Is it really that hard to believe that some actors actually make the effort to study up and have an opinion that is individual instead of hollywood stereotype views? I'm an actor, (though I'm just started last year, with doing stuff like student and independent films (one of which is gonna be out on DVD everywhere soon 'shameless plug' :neener: ), and I have the views on firearms that I always had and in the highly unlikely possibility that my acting becomes a career and I gain some recognition, I will keep the same gun views.
Yep, they took a trip to a courthouse and the media speculated they were getting married/getting a marriage license. Turned out one or both filled out apps for a CWP (at least Affleck).
I don't know much about B. Affleck
but that Maher guy is incredibly ignorant on gun stuff.
he claims to be libertarian!
but he really is a liberal.
I don't think its some nefarious scheme on Affleck's part. Whether you like his acting or not, I grew to respect the man because of this stance. He has tended to support democratic candidates, but has ALWAYS been very outspoken on the bahalf of and has made it clear he supports the 2nd amendment. This isn't a new switch ala clinton and others--afaik he has ALWAYS taken this position, as far back as I can remember, and he has taken pains NUMEROUS times when I saw him being interviewed, even when campaigning for some Democrat, to bring up the topic and state his position. Pretty well spoken actually--I'd vote for him over most politicians out there.
Now, if this DOES turn out to be some plan he's been hatching for years, then we'll all have to rethink how good an actor he is...
I heard that Affleck was trying to get ABC to make a pilot of a new show that he is writting about a hypothetical future in which an army of American patriots fight for freedom in a second revolution against a tryanical U.S. government. (seriously)
There might be more to his politics than we have been led to believe. I am cautiously optimistic. I think he might be one of those old fashioned liberals that actually has an appreciation for personal liberty while still supporting a strong central/'socially conscious" (sp?) government etc. etc.
Wow, knock me over with a feather!
And thank you, to what ever un-named shooter turned Ben onto our sport and way of life!
There are a few of us around. Though I'm more of a GDI. But we have to have a thick skin around fellow gun owners sometimes. Just like not all gun owners are crackpots, not all Democrats are gun-grabbing liberals.
That's main problem with that kind of rhetoric is you end up excluding a whole group of gun owners sympathetic to common causes, tarring them with the same broad brush you use for anti-gun activists. Gun rights can't be the property of just one political party. It has to be available to all Americans no matter what their political affiliation.
Good on Ben Affleck. It's rare to see someone go against the prevailing political grain in the movie biz.
As for Bill Maher, yeah he's a libertarian.
And I'm a Chinese jet pilot.
Saw him and O'reilly going back and forth with each other at last years Communist, oops sorry, Democratic national convention. He's definetly a liberal but I actually gained some respect for him that instead of just making outrageous statements like most Hollywood stars, "Bush lies", Bush is Hitler", "Republicans want to destroy the Earth". He actually had a civilized debate with O'reilly, explained his position and listened to the other side of his position. Now I ain't voting for him anytime soon but it was actually refreshing having a liberal debate without making outlandish statements or trying to twist the facts, a hollwood liberal at that.
I gave up debating with most liberal's.
Some are fine. But most resort to basless fact, idiotic unrealistic thinking, lack of basic comprehension, and personal attack to try and demean the other person or party.
I say if you don't like our constitution, there are plenty of countries where your dumb socialist anti-american no sense of what this country was built on attitude and move to one of countless socalist countries. I hear Europe is nice this time of year.
Quickly reading that list of anti-gun celebs, I saw that the actor Michael Gross was listed...
Wasn't he the guy who played "Burt Gummer" in Tremors? :eek:
My childhood hero has just been defiled... :(
