SW99 compact vs. Glock 26 vs. 9000s

I like the firepower-to-size ratio of the Glock 26 but can't get used to that grip angle on any Glock. I'd also like a more deliberate trigger pull on the first shot to allow for greater safety if packing without a holster.

The new SW99 compact in 9mm interests me. I have yet to hold a compact, but I was wondering how it compares in size to the Glock 26 or even the Beretta 9000s. The 9000s seemed really fat with strange controls. The glock, with the finger extension, is just the right size. Remember, I don't like Glocks. Argh!!!!

The SW99 seems to have a really low bore axis. I think it would be a great carry gun with a good set of night sights such as Meprolights. Anyone have experience with one? I'd stick with 9mm because of ammo cost and I have a Ruger P-95. I'd also like to see a Ruger 9mm 10 shot compact that is not as bulky as the P-95DC.

Not to answer your question, but . . .

Bear in mind that the Glock 26 has a 12-round magazine . . . you just can't buy it.

the sw99 feels so much thinner in your hand compared to a 9000. I cant get over how fat it looks and feels. The sw99 is a very narrow gun at barely a hair over an inch wide. The compact is like 3/4 of an inch shorter in the nose. With the finger rest on the mag I get all fingers on a grip, and I have some pretty fat hands. Ive never shot one so dont know how the recoil fills. But the non compact is my only pistol right now, but in .40. One thing going for the sw99 is the fact it feels as if it was poured into your hands. the g26 is a box to me. Just doesnt meld with my hands like the sw99 does. the 9000....just feels fat and like it would stick out too much on my side

oh yea forgot to add something. the sw99compact will take the full size mags no problem....just stick out the bottom. so if you got the 9mm and found some prebans in 9x19 you could have them as a backup. keep the short mag in for conceal, carry the full cap mag for a reload.

Of the three, I didn't like the Beretta I handled a while back. That external safety is REALLY stiff to manipulate! Between the S&W & the Glock, I'd go w/ the Glock & track down some pre ban mags.

Your post with the ... piqued my interest.

I read a post in the archives that the SW99 full-sized slide actually used more modern manufacturing techniques and barrel heat treating.

Is the SW99 compact slide blackened stainless steel vs. finished carbon steel in the Walther?

I guess I'll have to see one in person in order to form an opinion.

yes the sw99 uses a melonite finished stainless steel barrel. Cause the tenfier coatings are banned by the epa in the usa. so far my barrel is doing quite well. some wear on the upper part of the chamber where it contats the slide when the slide rides back.

no from what ive heard walther still very up in the air about the compact.

I handled a 9000 just today. I found the grip to be fat, the controles stiff, and the trigger needs improvement. Out side of that the gun was alright
I was looking for a 9MM I could make a carry piece out of so I picked up a Sig p239, very nice gun, good trigger and controles, though I found the slide release a little stiff. I'll probably go back in a couple of days and talk trade with the dealer. Have you looked at the Steyr M or S series? I have a M40 that I like very well it might be worth your while to at least look at them. The only reason that I'm not getting one in the 9MM is that I wanting something that's not plastic.

I loved my SW99 compact. I really liked the longer intentional first trigger pull! Once in single action, that thing is super quick for follow up shots with a very quick reset. Overall, it was nicely finished-I too wish it were the true all German P99! I had one in .40, would have loved it even more in 9mm, as in the subcompacts I think that 9mm is optimum balance of controllability/power. It is thinner than the Glocks too and way thinner than that pot bellied 9000. The interchangeable grips were nice as was the option of either flush fit magazine or extended one.

While I haven't had much time with a glock 26, and hever never even seen a SW99 Compact other than pictures, I had a chance to spend some time with the 9000 today, and after about 15 minutes, it went on my "do not buy" list. The range I find myself at more and more had a used one for rent/purchase ($359, IIRC) and since it is a neat-looking peice, I thought I'd try it.

The gun felt good to hold, and fit well in my hand, but that is really the only good thing I have to say about it.

Like most Baretta's, it has an exposed barrel, and on a compact, I'm not so sure that's a good idea. More mass on the slide means easier recoil, right? This gun had a lot of muzzle flip, and I think that's a big reason why. Also, (and this is pure personal opinion) the slide makes it difficult to do a press check to see if there's a round in the chamber. The grooves at the back of the slide are just not tall enough for me.

The safety was sticky, at best, and I almost needed a pair of pliers to get the magazine out.

I shot 30 rounds of the Winchester 9mm Wally World special. I had one FTE, with I suspect had more to do with the mag than anything else.

The trigger was gritty at best, but this probably has more to do with cleaning, or lack thereof, than anything else. This gun was DIRTY. (I know, show me a rental that isn't...)

If I had a chance to play with one that wasn't so abused, I might have a better opinion. But for my money, I'd look at the SW99C now, or even better, the Walther P99C in "early 2004" as I'm told. I'm saving for that one already.

I'm sticking with my Beretta compact M. Of the three you mention, the Glock 26 is the best. Wish I could buy two of them in that model.
