Tactics & Training What Really Happens In A Gunfight?

' The most dramatic wound that I ever personally saw involved a woman who was shot in the head by a .357 Magnum. I was a patrol deputy and responded to a public housing project on the report of a shooting. I arrived at the same time as the medic crew and found a white female sitting on the sofa with a dimpled hole in her forehead.

There was a similar wound on the back of her head. As I spoke to her at the scene (to find out who shot her, not to further my personal research) I was told that she had been in an argument with her live-in boyfriend when he picked up a snub-nosed .357 revolver and shot her in the forehead. She advised that her head, "Slammed back and I fell back onto the sofa. I have been sitting here ever since. I have a big head ache." It later turned out that the 158-grain jacketed semi-wadcutter bullet used in the shooting had spilt the lobes of her brain finer than any surgeon could have hoped to. The bullet left a hole in the rear of her skull, which was patched in some way. This victim was released from the hospital and then refused to testify against her boyfriend. ("I still love him.") He was prosecuted anyway. This incident remains one of the strangest things that I have ever seen. '

Most of the gun battles i see are fairly one sided. I personally had one guy shot 9 times, head and chest through a car windshield. Basically, the gunfight went down like this. 2 passanges and driver enter car. Males in the front seat, girlfriend of the driver in the back seat right behind him. Two men then approached the car and one drew a glock 9mm and started putting bullets through the windshield. He fired 9 times into the driver, spraying the victims GF with little chunks-o-skull and brain. By this time the passanger was running for it, shooter fired and got a hip shot. The attacking party then ran. Both sides were drug dealers. Driver was DOA, male passanger was on the ground, the bullet had impacted his hip and was now in his pants. I identified the caliber as 9mm and the handgun as a glock (polygonal rifling marks). GF was shaken but uninjured. There ya go. Completely one sided.

Another shooting, medic i know arrived on scene, once again drug related. This was a weird bullet would. Victim had been shot execution style, most of his skull was missing, but his brain was on the floor, perfectly intact sitting next to him. Never seen or heared of anything like that before.

We have had several head shots that didn't have any effect with hollowpoints. Most of these head shots that didn't have any effect did not penetrate the skull. In one shooting, the hollowpoint plugged up as it penetrated the skull and acted like a FMJ. Neighbors heard the shot and called the police. Officers found her alive and mobile but she did not respond to their questions. Our story didn't turn out as nice as his did as she died of infection after sugery. For the most part, head shot leave a big mess especially from rifles and/or shotguns.
