Take Commander Crusty's 50 Round Challenge--If You Dare

Here it is, your chance to see if you really are any good with that handgun.

Of course, it really depends for what purpose you are using the handgun.

The test may show you a competent target shooter but it says nothing about combat skills. However, any practice is good practice so go for it.

Yeh, not necessarily. It depends on your primary objective. ;) I would rather be able to draw from concealment and put a hammer pair in the COM at 3m while moving of the line attack quickly than be able to do well in this “challenge”. :) That said, being capable of tight groups at distance is not a bad thing and I see nothing inherently wrong w/ this challenge. For non-timed drills though, I think I would much prefer the “dot drill” w/ dot sizes and a distance that was just enough to prevent me from scoring perfect at maximum focus.

"If you are any good, you should certainly have 100% in the Milk Bottle and 90%+ in scored points. If you aren't that good, maybe you should practice more."

OK, commander crusty, here's my challenge. Use your handgun to hit a target at 300 yards. If you're any good, you'll hit the target, if not you need to practice more.

Commander Crusty is Back from the Range

Hi, Brighamr, Mavracer and All,

Commander Crusty here. Thank you all for the wonderful discussion. I appreciate your interest

FEEDBACK

Brighamr, I haven't shot any targets at 300 yards with my handgun yet, but I'd like to! I have done it a few times with my AR15 H-BAR and it was a BLAST--and yes, I can keep them on the paper at 300, as long as I use a target rifle.;~) I think Mavracer had the best reply. He's actually fired a course like this and scored an average of 495. Well done!

CLARIFICATION

The reloads are in there to make it a little tougher and to "force" people to practice their gun handling under pressure. Granted, this course isn't a lot of pressure for many of you, but just "shooting for score" can really undo some shooters. One of the lessons you might learn from taking the challenge is how you handle stress.

There is no time limit because, (Clintism Alert), "I never saw a stop watch in a gunfight." Also, most people don't have shot timers and using a stop watch or bullseye count down timer by yourself is a pain--I tried it!

If you can't find the B27Q-Blue target, use a plain B27, or a "Q" style FBI milk
bottle target. If you have cardboard, use that. The idea is to see what you can actually do! When you are done shooting (not talking), and you are looking at your target, are you still comfortable carrying that handgun? Did it work 100%, or are you making excuses? What was easy for you? What was hard? You can only learn those things when you get out there and burn some powder.

UPDATED RANGE REPORT

I just got back from the Range a few minutes ago. For the sake of comparison, I fired the course using my Ruger SR9 and my tricked out Airweight.

RUGER SR9

I learned that my SR9, the hot new gun that shoots "dead on" at 21 feet, shoots about a foot right at 25 yards. THAT is the kind of thing this course can show you. I still fired 450 points for score (90%) and kept 86% of the shots in the Milk Bottle "Q" target. I forgot the safety once, and the gun failed to lock open on the last round twice (I use a high thumbs grip with autos). So, I'm man enough to admit I need to sight this pistol in, and actually practice before I carry the Ruger SR9 with me in a public place.

S&W AIRWEIGHT

I discovered AGAIN, that I shoot revolvers well. With the J-frame and full wadcutter target loads, I shot a 483 or 97% for points. I had 100% of my shots in the "Q" target's Milk Bottle shape. Why am I shooting wadcutters? Well, some people do. I have problems with hand strength and while I can control the lightweight S&W with +P ammo, it HURTS me. I mean, 50 rounds will hurt me for a week (not kidding). So, laugh all you want, but I'm still going to practice with target loads. Anyone with a suggestion for a good, low recoil, standard pressure .38 hollow point, please share.

I'd love to read what happened when YOU tried the "Commander Crusty 50 Round Challenge."
